Brahmagiri Sanctuary

Location

The Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary, with evergreen and semi-evergreen forests, is located in the Kodagu district and makes a part of the Western Ghats. A natural habitat of tribes with shola-grassland, this sanctuary is famous for agricultural fields and coffee plantations. The sanctuary obtained its name from the highest point, the Brahmagiri peak, at a height of 1607 meters from sea level. Bamboos are well cultivated in these forests, with a species called Bambusa bamboos are in major.

Jim Corbett National Park

Location

Jim Corbett National Park is located in the state of Uttaranchal in India. The National Park was named after Jim Corbett, who had hunted down a number of tigers here, after they turned man-eaters. Jim Corbett National Park India is the oldest National Park in India.

Jim Corbett National Park India is among the nine Tiger Reserves created as part of the Project Tiger, launched in 1973. Project Tiger was a program launched for tiger conservation. With a core area of around 520 sq km and more than 100 species of trees, around 50 mammal species, nearly 600 bird species and more than 20 reptile species, Corbett National Park truly offers tourists more than they can bargain for.

History

The Corbett National Park was once a popular hunting of the British and was named after the legendary Jim Corbett, the hunter -turned naturalist who contributed to the setting up of this park. Corbett National Park was the first national park to come under the Project tiger launched in Corbett Park in 1973 with the aid of world Wildlife Fund.

Jayachamarajendra Zoo (Mysore Zoo)

Location

One of the main tourist attraction is the Mysore Zoo. The zoo has an excellent collection of animals, a beautiful outdoor stage and a colorful setting with the Chamundi Hills as its background and a contrived lake on its premises. It was renamed as Sri Chamarajendra zoo after the founder of the zoo.

After India attained freedom, the Zoo was presented by the then Maharaja to the Department of Parks and Gardens of the Mysore State Government. The Maharaja in his travel abroad collected rare animals from different countries and brought them to the zoo's collection.

Mookambika National Park

Location

The Mookambika National Park is part of the largest forest area in Karnataka and spreads across Kodachadri hills. The Mookambika National Park is home to a large variety of flora and fauna, some of which have been declared endangered. These forests are also home to about 64 rare varieties of medicinal plants and herbs.

Kabini Forest Reserve

Location

The Forest reserve has almost 250 species of avian life that flock here in large numbers. They include osprey, brown headed fishing eagle, racket tailed drongo, golden backed woodpecker, stork, peafowl, egrets, herons, ibis etc. The birds can be spotted from the watchtower at the lake.

Kabini forest reserve is known for its Asiatic elephants seen throughout the forest. The other species of wildlife includes langur, chitals, sambhar, bison, python, crocodiles, mouse deer, leopard, gaur, tiger, cobra, python etc.

Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary

Location

The Wildlife Sanctuary and the Ansh National Park located close to it contain huge areas of dense, deciduous forests. You can visit the place in open jeeps with trained guides to acquaint you with the diversity of the sanctuary.

The place is home to the famous Black Panther and many other animals including: Giant Iguana, Tiger, Leopards, Elephants, Gaur, Malabar Giant Squirrel and many more. The sanctuary also contains about 200 species of birds. You can engage yourself in bird watching while you are on a safari to the place.

BRT Wildlife Sanctuary

Sprawled across an area of 540 km, this place is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. The Sanctuary is situated at the southern fringe of Karnataka and is to the east of the Western Ghats. The vegetation type includes the dry scrub, deciduous, savanna, evergreen, Shola forests and Grasslands. There are many endangered species residing in the place. The place is inhabited by the Soligans, a local tribe.

It was in 1972 that the place became a wildlife sanctuary. It was at this time that cutting down of trees, hunting and the shifting cultivation of the tribals was stopped.
