Aralam wild life sanctuary

This wildlife sanctuary is at a distance of 35 km from Thalessery (22 km from Kunnur) and is home to tropical and semi evergreen forests. Within these forests animals like Deer, Elephants, Boars, Bisons, Leopards, Jungle Cats, various type Squirrels and rare species of birds are found. A tranquil mega sanctuary on the slopes of the Western Ghats covered with tropical and semi evergreen forests. Herds of deer, elephants, boar and bisons are quite common. Leopards, jungle cats, various type squirrels and rare species of birds have been found here.

Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary

Location

Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is close to the Idukki Arch Dam and covers a part of the Thodupuzha and Udumpanchola taluks of Idukki district. The total area covered by the park is 77 sq km out of which 33 sq km is occupied by the lake formed due to the construction of three artificial dams - Cheruthoni, Kulamavu and Idukki. The animals that can be sighted here include Elephants, Deers, Bears, Wild Pigs, Tigers and Leopards. Also to be seen are snakes like Python, Cobra, Ciper, Rat Snake, Iguana and birds like Hornbills, Wood Peckers and King Fishers.

Elephant Sanctuary (Punnathur Kotta)

Location

Elephant Camp in the Punnathur Kotta is the largest elephant sanctuary in India. At present it has more than 60 elephants. All these elephants are offered to Guruvayur temple by the devotees of Guruvayurappan. This elephant sanctuary is a specimen example elephant love and preservation.

This elephant camp has produced many renowned elephants like Guruvayur Kesavan and Guruvayur Padmanabhan. The elephants are well treated in this camp. These elephants are used to carry Guruvayur temple idols in the procession known as Shiveli.

Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary

Location

Located at a distance of 50 km from Devikulam is the famous Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary is the natural habitat for a number of species like elephants, sambars, leopards, and gaurs. You can also spot the highly endangered species of the Grizzled Giant Squirrel and the Star Tortoise. The watchtower is the idyllic place, which commands the incredible view of the Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary. Another highlight of the sanctuary is the Thoovanam Falls on the river Chinnar.

Kadalundi

If you are looking for a natural habitat then perhaps one of the nicest places that you can go in India is Kadalundi. Kadalundi is actually a bird sanctuary that has a river running across it. There is also a town next to the sanctuary called Kadalundi. Radhanagari Wildlife Sanctuary

Location

30 km away from Dajipur Sanctuary, and 52 km from Panhala is the Radhanagari Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary is situated between the main reservoirs of Shahu Sagar and Laxmi Sagar. It is placed in Kolhapur district. Radhanagari Wildlife Sanctuary spreads over an area of 351 sq km and is a south tropical semi-evergreen forest.

The whole area is protected with rolling steep escarpments. The Radhanagari Wildlife Sanctuary is also known for Bison and other wild creatures.

Location

Dajipur Bison Sanctuary is spread over Kolhapur and Sindhudurg districts in Maharashtra. The Dajipur Bison Sanctuary is situated on the border of Kolhapur and Sindhudurg districts. The jungle Resort is a scenic spot near the backwaters of the Radhanagri dam. It is surrounded by hilly areas and thick forests abundant in wildlife. Bhimshankar Wildlife Sanctuary

Location

The 100 sq km Bhimashankar wildlife sanctuary is tucked away in the hilly and thickly forested Sahayadris. Some of the rare and endangered species like the Indian giant squirrel and shekru are found here. The other animals that occupy the sanctuary are leopards, wild boars, porcupines, barking deers, sambars, hyenas, flying squirrels, Rhesus macaque, Hanuman langur, etc. The sanctuary also has a very rich flora and fauna. A trek through the forests is rewarding for bird watchers.

Kanakeshwar Forest

Location

The Kanakeshwar Forest is a dense forest. Tourists are allowed to venture into the forest at their own risks.

The population of the forest comprises of wild boars, poisonous snakes and panthers. They are the right owners of the forest. The silence of the jungle and the hills can be felt in this area. Wild leopards can be seen roaming the forest areas.

Even though the Kanakeshwar Forest is dense, it has a lush green look. But due to its depth, the forest looks dark even during the day time.
