Tarakeshwar Temple

Location

Tarakeshewar Temple, the shrine dedicated to Taraknath (one of the forms of Lord Shiva), was assumed to be built in 1729 AD by Raja Bharamalla. A Shayambhu ling is the presiding deity.

There are many interesting legends behind the establishment of Tarakeshwar temple. One story goes with a person Vishnu Das and his brother came to Tarakeshwar town from Ayodhya. The locals looked suspiciously the people and to prove his innocence Vishnu Das hold a red hot iron in his hand. Later his brother unearthed a Shivalinga from a spot in the town. He got a night dream revealing that it was Lord Shiva and he was instructed to establish a temple at the spot.

Dudhpukur Tank

Location

An important tank known as Dudhpukur tank is placed north of the Tarakeshwar temple and pilgrims unfailingly take a dip in it. It is believed that the holy bath in this tank can give the people all well being and it will fulfill the wishes and prayers.

The legendary stories behind the Tarakeshwar temple connects the Dudhpukur (Milk tank) with the establishment of the temple for Shiva. The water in this tank is believed to be medicated and has curative powers. Devotees can make the mind and body purified by taking a bath in this tank.

Ma Tara Temple

Location

The serene village of Tarapith is popular due to the Ma Tara temple enshrining a murti of the Goddess Tara in the form of Kali Devi. Many legendary stories are floating in the village pointing to the temple history and establishment. The present temple is built by Jagannath Ray of Mallarpur village in 1225.

Nalhateshwari Temple

Location

Nalhateshwari Temple located in the Nalhati town is a nearby temple attraction to Tarapith. The town Nalhati is named after Nalhateshwari temple, one of the Shakthi Peetha in India. This temple is believed to be erected at a spot where the ‘Nala’, the throat of Goddess Sati (Shakthi) had fallen. The temple is dedicated to the Kali form of Goddess Devi.

Apart from the idol of Goddess Shakthi, the temple houses many small shrines dedicated to other Gods and Goddesses including Lord Shiva. Pigrims throng to this temple during the Mahanavami days during October.

Jain Temples

Location

There are three major Jain Temples in the town of Ziaganj. The Adinath Maharaj Jain Mandir is enormous and the most impressive of the three. Ziaganj has two of the larger Jain temples, namely the Bimalnathji Jain Mandir and the Sambhunathji Mandir, near the market. The former is the more striking of the two. It has an involved, multilayered, brick-masoned steeple.

Baranagar Temple

Location

Near Azimganj is the fascinating Baranagar temple complex built by Rani Bhabani (1714 – 1793), the Zamindar of Natore. The Baranagar Temple complex is chiefly the creation of Rani Bhabani of Natore. The Bhabaniswara, Char Bangla, Jod Bangla and Rajrajeshwari are the main temples. The brick-built temples are considered to be amongst the best examples of Bengal Terracotta art.

Rainawari

Location

Rainawari is the holy place where the most important gurudwara in Srinagar is situated. The Gurudwara is built by the sixth guru of Sikhism who traveled through Kashmir. The guru halted in this place and a gurudwara, known as Chatti Padshahi Gurudwara was constructed.

Rainawari has historical and religious importance. This place has all the beauty of any other place in Srinagar, ranging from picturesque surroundings, cool and nice weather and calm, quiet environment. Visitors can mix up with locals and have a close look at their lifestyle and culture.

Chatti Padshahi Gurudwara

Location

The sixth Sikh guru travelled through Kashmir, stopping to preach occasionally. A Gurudwara has been built at the exact site of each of these halts. The most important one among these is Chhatti Padshahi Gurudwara, situated near the Kathi Darwaza, in Rainawari, Srinagar, which is held in great reverence by devotees of all faiths.

Chatti Padshahi Gurudwara is placed very close to the Kathi Darwaza, the main entrance of Hari Parbat Fort at Rainawari in Srinagar. This is the most important Gurudwara built by the sixth guru of Sikhs.
