Vijaydurg Fort

Location

Vijaydurg fort with its numerous towers, massive walls and spacious interiors is spread over an area of over 6acres. It is set along the serene coastline of the Arabian Sea and reflects the supremacy of the Marathas during the reign of Shivaji. There is a Rameshwar temple and a shrine of Shivaji inside the fort.

Maharaja's Palace

Location

The Maharaja's Palace is an impressive palace in Kolhapur constructed in 1881 and it presently encloses the famous Shahaji Chhatrapati museum. The place was constructed in Indo-Saracenic colonial architectural style and was designed by the renowned British architect Charles Mant.

The museum displays many exquisite and wonderful possessions of the Maharajas’ clothes, memorabilia, hunting photos and many such artifacts and utensils. This palace and museum offer a close look at the ancient royal cultures and life styles.

Shalini Palace

Location

Shalini Palace in Kolhapur city in Maharashtra state in India was built in 1931-34 at a cost of Rs. Eight lakhs was named after Princes Shrimant Shalini Raje of Kolhapur. The Palace stands on the west bank of the picturesque Rankala Lake (Circumference-2.5 miles) & is surrounded by towering palm trees, lush greenery & lovely gardens. The Palace is built of intricately carved black stone and Italian marble Rich decorative wooden doorways fitted with etched Belgium glass bearing the crest of the Maharaja of Kolhapur, add to the regal grandeur.

Tala Fort

Location

A fortified monument on the southern bank of Malti creek, the Tala fort lies east west at a height of 1000 feet above the sea level in Tara town in Maharashtra. The fort is separated from the rest of the hill by a wide gap. This protected monument of 4th century was built during the reign of Bhoja Raja and was used as a watch on the beautiful Rajpuri stream.

Ghosala Fort

Location

An architectural splendor of yester years, Ghosala fort situates in between the Revdanda and Salav creeks. Situated on the isolated Roha Hills, this fort can be ascended from the northern side without much difficulty. Bounded by so many tiny creeks, the Ghosala fort looks marvelous when viewed from the northern side. Presence of two temples and a Darga in the fort evoke the curiosity of any visitor.

Revdanda Beach Fort

Location

A fort in a ruined condition, Revdanda Beach Fort is a remnant of the Portuguese rule in India. Much of this Portuguese fort is in devastated condition and run over by betel nut plantations. Now a relic of the past, what remains there is, only a seven-story tower which pushes its windswept, shrubbery enclosed head over slim stem palm trees on which the betel nut fruit grow. A yawning cannonball holes in the fortification walls border the sea.

Though Revdanda Fort is in ruins, it makes a pretty sight with abundance of water flanked it by the three sides.

Karnala Fort

Location

Redeemed with the power struggle of many rulers, Karnala Fort stands as a specimen of the 13th century constructions. The fort was sparingly used by the Karnala rulers including Angres, Mudhan and Peshwas until 1818, by which time British rulers have taken over the grand old fort under their control.

The Karnala Fort engulf a steep rock in the midst of greenish surroundings and has been a challenge to many adventurous trekkers all through the past and continue to be a great attraction among the fans of trekkers. The fort doorway is adorned with many carvings of elephants and tigers. One can see cute water reservoirs developed naturally in the rocks. The cool surroundings and the beautiful landscapes make this region a place for calm weekends.

Peth Fort

Location

Peth Fort, also known as Kotligad, is a major attraction of the small village Peth nearby to Karjat in its north east region. Peth is a conically shaped hill and it offers a panoramic view of the foothills. The fort is at the pinnacle of the mount and it is placed perfectly on the back drop of Matheran ranges and Western Ghats. One can view the Konkan country side from the fort and the beauty of this view is majestic.

Phansad wildlife sanctuary and Nethersole Dam are two main attractions nearby Peth.

Bhopatgad Fort

Location

Bhopatgad Fort, a comparably small fort, located in the outskirts of Jawahar has a structure like a fort constructed by Chathrapathi Shivaji. It is believed that Shivaji was holding his official and personal meetings in this fort, made with dilapidated rocks. The inner chamber looks dark. This is a historical monument related strongly with the Maratha Kingdom.
