Started as a school named Patha Bhavana, the ideas and ideology of Rabindranath Tagore has helped it grow into a university. His principle was that learning in a natural environment can be more enjoyable and fruitful. In 1913, after Rabindranath Tagore was awarded with Noble, the school was expanded further and was renamed Vishwa Bharati Unisversity. The university has given to the world leaders like Indira Gandhi, Satyajit Ray and Amartya Sen. There are many institutes under the university, the most famous of them all being the Kala Bhavana (Institute of Fine Arts).
Vidya Bhavana, established in 1925 by the great poet and Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore, is a study centre dedicated to humanities and social sciences located Visva Bharati University complex in Shantiniketan. The centre provides the requisites to undergo regular courses for graduate and post graduate degrees. Many foreign national are undergoing courses in this Institute, a one year diploma course on Indian culture and civilization is offered in the Institute for foreign students.

As all other bhavanas, Siksha Bhavana is also established by the poet Rabindranath Tagore. This institute offers Graduate and Postgraduate courses in Science subjects such as mathematics, statistics, chemistry, biotechnology, zoology, and botany. It also offers computer courses like MCA. Siksha Bhavana organizes National and International symposiums and seminars on the advancement of Science subjects.
