Nartiang Hills

History

Cherrapunji was initially named as Sohra, pronounced as "Churra" by the British. But however now again the government of Meghalaya is decided to refer Cherrapunji by its original name. There are evidences for this place being under the British for a period like one can see the monument of David Scott who was the British Administrator in NE India, 1802–31.Though the place receive rainfall throughout the year irrigation is not possible here because of heavy rain the topsoil is washed away and as a result of this you can see encroachment of the people into the forest.

By Road: Cherrapunjee is easily accessible from Shillong by bus and taxi as it is only 60 km from Shillong. There are regular bus services between Shillong and Cherrapunjee, which is 56 km away. The MTDC organizes regular conducted tours by luxury coaches to cover places of tourist interest in Cherrapunjee.

Yercaud

State

Yercaud is the only hill station in the Eastern Ghats near Salem in the Servarayan range of hills (anglicized as Shevaroys). It got its name from the Tamil words, yeri and kaadu, meaning lake and forest respectively. The place offers great views of the hills descending into the thickly forested plains below. The slopes of the hills are filled with tantalizing scents of coffee, fruits and spices.

Yercaud has also been called the “Ooty of the Poor” as it is one of the least expensive hill stations in India.

History

Yercaud was discovered by British in the early 19th century. There are accounts of coffee plantations being introduced by a British officer in the area in the second decade of the 19th century.

History

Vellore is located on the banks of river Palar. It literally means “City of Spears” that itself gives some indication of the historicity of the place. The evidence of such is strewn across the city.
