Panchkula

Panchkula is a satellite city of the Union Territory of Chandigarh and is part of Chandigarh Capital Region. The origin of the name Panchkula is based on the five irrigation canals (or kuls as they were called, making it Panch Kul of five canals) that take water from the Ghaggar in the uphill section and distribute it from Nada Sahib to Mansa Devi. The prestigious Chandimandir Cantonment Headquarters of the Indian Army Western Command, is also located in Panchkula city.

Morni

State

Morni, nestled in the lower Shivaliks, also called Bhoj Jabial is the only hill station in Haryana blessed with beautiful rivers, streams, hot springs, waterfalls, forests etc. The cool climate and beautiful scenery attract many holiday makers from the nearby state capital of Chandigarh. According to local folklore the place was once ruled by a queen called Morni, and that is how it got its name.

Karnal

State

Karnal is a city lies along the west bank of the Yamuna River, is said to be derived from that of Karna, a warrior in the ancient epic poem the Mahabharata and the town's legendary founder. It was later annexed by the Raja of Jind in 1763 AD and was taken from him by George Thomas in 1797. The British established a cantonment in 1811 AD but abandoned it after 30 years due to the outbreak of malaria.

Jind

State

Jind is said to be the town that had been founded at the time of Mahabharta. According to an old saying the Pandavas built a temple in honour of Jainti Devi (the goddess of victory), offered prayers for success, and then launched the battle with the Kauravas. The town grew up around the temple and was named Jaintapuri (Abode of Jainti Devi) which later on came to be known as Jind.

Hissar

State

Hisar town was one of the prime centers of Harappan culture, associated with ancient Vedic culture tribes such as Bharatas, Purus, Kurus, Mujavatas and Mahavrishas. Feroze Shah Tughlaq constructed a fort here and called it Hissar-e-Firoza (fort of Feroze) and dug canals from the Yamuna and Ghaggar rivers to irrigate the dry land.
