Aloobari Gompa

Location

Aloobari Gomba, which is situated three kilometers away from the center of Darjeeling, is a monastery where you can find Tibetan and Sikkimese monks. These monks sell religious accessories and other handicrafts. If you are interested in shopping as well as sightseeing, then Aloobari Gomba is a place of choice to visit.

Shanderswartala Temple

Location

Shanderswartala Temple is the oldest temple in Chinsurah. It is about 5 km away from the Chinsurah railway station. The temple is situated on the bank of the river Ganges, north of the Dutta Ghat. The temple was established by Sidheswar Roychoudhury after the Lingam of Shiva was placed by Digambar Halder in the 16th Century.

This Temple has a 'Dhak' made of brass, which was presented by the Dutch Governor of that time and is still used. There is also Durga Temple which was established in the year 1845.

Bandel Imambara

The Imambara, a Shia Muslim pilgrimage, is located two kilometers away from the Church, on the banks of the Hooghly River. It was built by Haji Mohammad Mohsin in 1861, at a cost of 2,75,000 rupees. The sundial in the garden is of interest to most visitors, and the 35-m. high clock tower offers a wonderful view.

Inside the Imambara, the walls are adorned by quotes from the Koran, carved in marble. Muslim festivals, particularly Muharram, are celebrated every year with great splendour.

Church of our Lady of Bandel

Location

Bandel Church was built in 1599 by Captain Pedro Tavares. This church was established by Christians, who already outnumbered the Hindus by 1598. By the mid 16th century the Portuguese used Bandel as a port.

The original building of the church was burnt down by the Moors in 1632 during the sacking of Hooghly. Gomez de Soto built a new church on the same site in 1660. The keystone of the older church can still be seen along the eastern gate of the church. It has three altars, several tombstones, an organ and a shrine of Mary.

Sacred Heart Church of Chandannagar

Location

The beautiful church stands over for two centuries to mark the beauty of the architecture during the French period - a good place to visit for th historians and tourists. The remains of the church at St. Louis is also an attractive tourist spot. This beautiful Church was built by the French during 17/18 th Century. Situated just opposite Chandannagore Collage and French residency, this beautiful structure shows how fine the French engineers were.

Temple of Hanseshwari

Location

This wonderful temple of Goddess Kali ( here she is known as Hanseshwari mother) was built by Raja ( King) Nrishinghadev Ray in 1798. He collected stones ( a kind of marble or lime stone) for this temple from Chunar a place near Allahabad. The height of the temple is 27.5 meter or 90 feet. It has a total of 13 peaks. Those days it was supposed to be an example of fine architect. But the king left for his heavenly abode in 1802 and the temple was later completed by the queen Shankari. The king was one genuine Hindu King of proper bloodline and not made by the British Rulers, who made several their sycophants as king or land lords, then they ruled India for more than 300 years!
