Shashur Monastery

Location

Located at a distance of 1.5 km from Keylong, the Shashur monastery was founded by Lama Deva Tyatsho of Zanaskar, Ladakh. In the 17 AD, he was a missionary of the king of Bhutan, Nawang Namgyal. The term Shashur means 'in the blue pines'. The monastery houses a statue of Namgyal, a 15-feet 'Thankha' and invaluable wall paintings depicting all the siddhas of Buddhism. The building of the monastery is a three-storey tall structure which, despite certain deviations, conforms to the ancient mandala concept.

Shashpur Monastery

Location

Famous for the paintings that depict the history of 84 Buddhas and the devil dance by the Lamas in June/July; established in the 17th century. Set on a hill about 3 kms. from Keylong towards north. During June/July this monastery draws numerous visitors when Lamas perform devil dance. It was established in the 17th century AD. The paintings in the monastery represent the history of 84 Buddha's.

Kardang Monastery

Location

This monastery is located in the erstwhile capital of Lahaul, the village of Kardang. At an altitude of 3500 m, this monastery is around 5 km away from Keylong across the Bhaga river. The architecture of the monastery, believed to be built in the 12th century, is typically Lahaul and Spiti style. There is a big library consisting Kangyur and Tangyur volumes of Buddhist scriptures in Bhoti. Also to be seen are beautiful thangkas paintings and musical instruments such as lutes, drums, horns and old weapons. Colourful frescoes and murals are yet another attractions of the monastery.

Raghunath Temple

Location

This famous Rahgunath temple is renowned for the seven day long Dussehra festivals. This temple is dedicated to Raghunath Ji. The idol in the temple is taken from Tretnath temple and the popular belief is that it is the same idol that was used by Lord Rama. Raghunath Temple was built in the year 1650 AD. The temple architecture is a curious blend of Pyramidal and Pahari style.

The deity in this shrine is believed to be the safe guarder of the entire valley and it is believed that King Jagat Singh constructed this temple to get rid of his sinful past.

Jagannathi Devi Temple

Location

The sacred abode of Jagannathi devi, this temple is believed to have been constructed 1500 years ago. The deity in the temple is also known as Bhuweneshawari, who is considered as the sister of Lord Vishnu. The walls of the temple are carved with the images of Durga and the temple as such reflects the local architecture.

Like all other temples in India, this pretty shrine also is linked with a fabulous legend. It says that, once a shepherd boy accidentally noticed that two girls danced to the tune of his magical flute and he caught hold of one among them. The goddess revealed her identity and agreed to settle in the village at Bekhli.

Bijli Mahadev Temple

Location

Situated atop of a majestic hill, Bijli Mahadev Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. This temple houses the pictorial view of the luxuriant valley below. The Pahari style temple architecture offers an eye-catching scenario not only to the ardent devotees but also to the frequent traveler.

Placed at a height of 2450 meters, this temple holds an amazing but true story of its own. It says that Shivlinga in the temple had broken into pieces due to lightning and the temple priest adheres it with butter. It is quite unbelievable that this strange phenomena recurs every year.

Kothi

Location

Just 3 km from Recong Peo Kothi has an ancient temple dedicated to the goddess Chanadika Devi. Set against a backdrop of mountains of deodar the temple has an unusual ard1itectural style and fine sculpture. An exquisite gold image of the goddess is enshrined in the sanctrum.
