Vekkaliamman Temple

Location

Tiruchirapalli is often called as temple town as large numbers of temples are located in and round the city. Vekkliamman Temple is an important temple situated at Worriyur, the seat of famous Chola kingdom. This is a unique temple as there is no roof above the presiding deity unlike all other temples. It is believed that Goddess Vekkaliamman has saved the people of Tiruchirappalli from the sand rain and asked the devotees not to build a roof for her temple unless all the people in Trichirappalli get roofs for living. There are poojas conducted on daily basis.

Viralimalai Murugan Temple

Location

This temple is situated in Pudukkottai District at Viralimalai. Lord Muruga is at the top of the hill. He is seated on a peacock associated with Valli and Devasena. This temple is assumed to have been existed prior to 15th century. Six times puja is performed. Cigar is a distinct offering done to this deity during pujas. From the foot of the hill steps are there to reach the temple with many mandapas for rest. A water tank called Saravana Poigai is sited on the southern foot of the hill.

Agnipureeswarar Temple

Location

Agnipureeswarar Temple is a revered shrine assumed to be one (the 126th) in the series of Tevara Stalams in the Chola Region covering the south of the Kaveri River. Agnipreeswarar (Lord Shiva) is the prime deity in this ancient temple. Legendary stories tell that great sage Agastyar observed the divine marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati at this holy place in Thiruvarur. This temple faces east.

Kothanda Ramar Temple

Location

Kothanda Ramar Temple is located in Mudikondan lying between Thiruvarur and Mayiladuthurai. The prime deity in this temple is Lord Rama. The idol in this temple is adorned with a beautiful crown. It is believed that depiction of Rama in King’s attire happened even before he became the King. This form of Rama was to please the sage Bharadwajar.

Rajagopalaswamy Temple

Location

Sri Rajagopalaswamy Temple in Thiruvarur is located at Mannargudi in the outskirts of Thiruvarur. This temple is dedicated to Rajagopalaswamy, an aesthetically beautiful form of Lord Krishna. This temple is a gigantic temple in a vast expanse of land. It has amazing seven circumambulatory paths, a stately Rajagopuram (tower) with an unassuming height of 154 feet and sixteen majestic towers. The temple is captivatingly marvelous and structurally beautiful showcasing the grand old architectural excellence.

Saraswati Temple

Location

Saraswati Temple in Thiruvarur is located in the small village Kuthanur on the banks of the river Arasilar, a tributary of the River Kaveri in the district of Thiruvarur, Tamil Nadu. This is one of the few temples in India dedicated to Goddess Saraswati, the goddess of learning and consort of Lord Brahma.

Folk tales point to the Ottakuttar, a famous Tamil poet who carried out penance to this deity for the existence of this temple during 12th century AD. It is believed that the saint poet got a darshan (vision) of goddess Saraswati at this place. A beautiful image of Ottakuttar is seen at the entrance of this temple.

Virupaksha Cave

Location

Virupaksha Cave is a cave ashram in the shape of a perfect ‘OM’ located on the eastern slope of the famous Arunachala hill in Thiruvannamalai. This holy cave is perched on a small peak just below, about 200 ft below, the Skandasram cave. This cave has a small gopuram on the eastern side of it. Down the peak, there are seven sacred springs on the slope of the hill.
