The Jambughoda Wildlife Sanctuary comprises dense forests covered with teak, bamboo, mahuda trees and other small vegetation. There are various animal species in this sanctuary, including nilgai (blue bull, the largest antelope in Asia), jackal, hyena and wild boar. Barking deer, sloth bear and chausingha (four-horned antelope) are few other animals seen in this sanctuary.
11 kms. to the south of Library Point lies an old sanctuary established in 1993 and covering an area of 339 hectares. It is famous for the extinct bird species, Mountain Quail (Pahari Bater), which was last spotted in 1876. The famous extinct bird species, the Mountain Quail, was last spotted here after which a sanctuary has come up in its name, 11 kms from the Mussoorie Library.
Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary is situated around 14 km from Bambolim and is considered as the only bird sanctuary in Goa. Covering an area of around 1.8 sq km, it is located along the Mandovi River on the western region of the Chorao Island. The sanctuary was named after Dr. Salim Ali, who is counted among the famous ornithologists of India.
Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the major attractions of Canacona, which was established in the year 1968. Located in the South Goa District, the wildlife reserve is spread over an area of 86 sq km. The distinguishing feature of the sanctuary is the variegated flora in three forests, which include moist deciduous, semi-evergreen and evergreen forests.
There are eight nature trails across the reserve. The length of the nature trails ranges between 500 metres and 5 km. Six watchtowers, along with one tree top, can be used for viewing the varied flora and fauna of the sanctuary. The sanctuary is the originating point of different rivers, which include the Gal and Talpona.
Chattbir Zoo, located on the Chandigarh-Patiala road, about 15 km from Chandigarh, is the largest zoo in north India. Spreading over an extensive wooded area on the banks of the Ghaggar river, the zoo is residence to more than 100 varieties of mammals, birds and reptiles. Other attractions of the zoo is the deer and lion safari.
One of the main attractions of Silvassa, the lion safari lies 10 km away from Silvassa and is spread over 20 hectares, a continuous north-south core area of Dadra Nagar and Haveli Wildlife sanctuary.
The Delhi zoo, close to Purana Qila, near ITO, was established in 1959 and is spread over a massive area of 214 acres. Is regarded as one of the finest zoos in Asia and efforts have been made to provide an almost natural habitat to the animals and birds. There are more than 2,000 animals and bird species from places like Africa, America, Australia and even Asia. There is a lot of greenery around the zoo and it is an ideal picnic spot especially in winter.
Satpura National Park is located in Hoshangabad district of Madhya Pradesh in India. Established in 1981, Satpura National Park covers a wide area of 524 sq km.
A part of the central Indian Highland Ecosystem, it spreads through the dense woody forest of evergreen sal, teak and bamboo. This National Park is extremely rocky and it is bestowed with sandstone peaks, narrow gorges, and ravines. Ken Gharial sanctuary gets its name from the 6 m long fish-eating Gharial, the very rare speciaes of crocodiles. This Sanctuary is natural habitat of Gharial.
Ken Gharial Sanctuary, situated in Chhatarpur District of Madhya Pradesh near to Panna, lies at the convergence of Khudar and Ken rivers. Apart from Gharial, many other species can be spotted here. Wild boar, Chinkara, blue bull, peacock and chital are some among them. This is a beautiful sanctuary to visit; specifically wild life enthusiasts will have the rare chance of getting a view of Gharial.
