Tara Kund

Location

Situated at a height of 2,200 m, Tara Kund is a picturesque spot amidst lofty mountains in the Chariserh development area. A small lake and an ancient temple adorn the place. The Teej Festival is celebrated with great gaiety when the local people come here to worship and pay homage to God.

Aurobindo Ashram

Location

The Himalayan Center of Sri Aurobindo Ashram at Nainital is nestled cozily amidst the green hills of the Kumaon valley, about a kilometer away from the busy market area of Nainital. A steep climb up the slope to the ashram is a good exercise and gives a sense of contentment upon having reached the ashram.

Naina Devi Temple

Location

Naina Devi temple is situated on the northern end of the Naini Lake, formed after the eye of Goddess Sati fell on this part of land. The temple dates back to the ancient days of history when Sati, the wife of Lord Shiva burnt herself to death unable to bear the insult when her father King Daksha refused to invite Sati and Lord Shiva for a yajna. Devastated and grief-stricken, when Lord Shiva was returning to their abode with her body in his arms, her body parts fells on various spots on earth.

Christ Church

Location

The Christ Church was built in 1836 as per the Gothic design and is believed to be the most ancient church in the Himalayas. The events in the life of Jesus Christ are depicted in the pre-Raphaelite stained glass windows in the Church.

Especially mentionable is the high altar in the Church that depicts the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The interiors of the Church are impressive, with the walls adorned with contributions from various other people.

Jwala Devi Temple

Location

Situated atop the Benog Hills, closer to the Benog Wildlife Sanctuary, a trip to the Jwala Devi temple to seek blessings of the Goddess ensures a heavenly feeling. The feeling of being close to nature and even closer to God arises once you reach this amazing hilltop.

One can capture the breathtaking view of entire Mussoorie from the heights of the Jwala Devi temple, the Doon valley and the Yamuna River flowing in the north, as also the Yamuna Bridge in the far distance. Make sure you are equipped with precise binoculars to take a glimpse of the scenic beauty.

Tibetan Buddhist Temple

Location

Set up by the Tibetan population in Mussoorie, the Tibetan Buddhist temple is also known as Shedup Choepelling temple and is located on the Happy Valley road close to the IAS Academy. The temple can be visited between 7 am to 5 pm.

Dalai Lama took refuge in Mussoorie after he fled Tibet and was granted land in Dharamshala by the then Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.

Duryodhana Temple

Location

Mori’s local inhabitants claims or believed themselves as the ascendants of the Pandavas and Kauravas. They worship the Kauravas as the God. The Duryodhana temple, the temple for the eldest Kaurava, in Jakhol near Mori was constructed by the local folks. The main deity is Duryodhana. This is the biggest temple in the state dedicated to Duryodhana.
