Wild Life Area at Abohar

Location

Situated in the southern tip of the Division, the wild Life Sanctuary in Abohar is unique in the sense that it is an open Sanctuary comprising of 13 revenue villages. The Bishnoi community whose love for animals is legendary inhabits these villages. The total area of the Sanctuary is 46513 acres. It was declared as a Wild Life Sanctuary under the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972 in 2000. The main species found in the Sanctuary is the black buck, which can be seen loitering around in the fields and sometimes even in homesteads like cattle.

Simlipal National Park

Location

Simlipal National Park, a pristine wildlife region that defies all expectations, had got the status of National Park in 1979. This is a tiger reserve under Project Tiger declared in 1956, a project of Government of India to conserve and protect the Indian Tigers.

This National Park is credited with abundant flora and fauna. It is the replica of the ecosystem with all kinds of vegetation, wild animals, rare birds and inhabitants of Santhal tribe. The flora of Simlipal National Park is enriched with an amazing number of 501 different species hailing from more than 100 families which includes many varieties of Orchids.

Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary

Location

A sprawling expansion of 650 sq km, which houses rich marine vegetation, dynamic and salt tolerant varieties of trees, accumulated land, rivers, estuaries, mud flats, creeks and backwater Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary acquires a unique position. Regarded as one of its kind in the entire Asia, this sanctuary is famous as a natural abode of the estuarine crocodiles.

Every year the rare species called Olive Ridley Sea Turtles flock here and that forms a major attraction of the park. Considering its wide popularity, the authorities have proclaimed this sanctuary as a national park in the year 1998.

Chilka Bird Sanctuary

Location

The Nalabana Island has been classified as a Bird Sanctuary under the wildlife protection act. It is named as Chilka Bird Sanctuary. There are more than 150 species of migratory and residential birds here. It is said that, around a million migratory birds nestled here during the winter season.

Nandankanan Zoo

Location

Nandankanan Zoo, located in the midst of greenish environment of Chandaka Forest, has credited with some rare species of animals. Nandankanan is composed of a botanical Garden, a sanctuary and a zoo and is in the shore of picturesque Kanjia Lake.

Nandankanan, literally means Garden of Heaven, was established during 1960 and declared open as a sanctuary and zoo in 1979. The spectacular animals in the zoo include the rare species of white tigers. The zoo is also a home to the Captive Gharial Crocodile breeding center, first in the country.

Birsa Zoological Park

Location

Birsa zoological park, also named as Birsa Jaivik Udyan, is an eco friendly tourist spot who like to know more about mammalian fauna and also to see the nature’s wild life in its own habitat. The park is placed near Ormanjhi on the Ranchi-Patna National highway close to Ranchi. The animals left to lead a natural life here include lions, tigers, varied varieties of monkey and deer.

Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary

Location

Located at an altitude of 3000 feet and extending for more than 193 sq km, Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary is established in 1975. The wildlife sanctuary is the hamlet of many wild animals and bird fauna. The jungle forests are credited with invaluable woody trees and plant life.

The animals, which can be spotted in this natural sanctuary are elephants, tigers, leopards, barking deer, porcupines, sambar and sloth bears. One can experience the view the wild life in their natural habitat.
