Our Lady of Doloures Basilica

Location

Our Lady of Doloures Basilica Church, also called Puthan Pally, is one of the tallest and biggest churches in Asia dedicated to Lady of Sorrows. Built in Gothic architectural style, it has some beautiful frescoes and wall paintings on Biblical themes.

There is a huge dome on top of the main altar that is adorned with paintings done in vibrant colours of the Apostles, Mater Dolorosa and seven Dolours of the Blessed Virgin. It has a vaulted ceiling that encloses the main altar and fifteen beautiful side altars.

Arattupuzha Temple

Location

Arattupuzha temple with presiding deity as Lord Ayyappa is a famous temple near Thrissur city. Annual Arattupuzha pooram festival attracts thousands of people to this temple town. It is the oldest pooram festival all over Kerala.

It is believed that on the pooram day, all hundred and one Gods and Goddesses from the neighboring places visit Lord Ayyappa at this temple. The pooram procession with 61 elephants accompanied with Pandimelam, Panchavadyam, and Nadaswaram is immaculate extravaganza. The idols of the deities of the temples in and around are carried over the elephants.

Thirunelly Temple

Location

Thirunelly temple is 3000 years old and is near the Papanashini stream. This temple is devoted to Vishnu. This is constructed with 30 granite columns to protect it. There is a bridge from the Papanashini stream coming to the temple. This is of great help to the Thirunelly temple as the Papanashini water is used for the temple directly for its precincts.

Papanashini

Location

Papanashini meaning "Washing of sins" is a river in Kerala. Papanashini has a story of its origin. Lord Brahma was making Vishnu’s idol and at the same time Garuda with a pot of nectar called Amrit Kumbha reached the installation place. When Garuda was completing his circling, one drop of Amrita fell into the stream, and hence the stream obtained the power of purification. After this incident, the stream was referred as Papanashini.

Panchatirtha

Location

Panchathirtha is situated towards the southern side of the Thirunelly temple. The word Pancha means five and thirtha represents the rivers. As per the ancient traditions Panchathirtha is a large, splendid lake encompassing the Sankha, Chakra, Badma, Gatha and Sreepaada tirthas. It is believed that these five met at a point and hence acquired this name.

Juma Masjid

Location

Juma Masjid is located adjacent to the Maidan in the Thalassery town. Juma Masjid is recognized as one of the remarkable mosques in the district. Juma Masjid is believed to be nearly a thousand years old.

Juma Masjid is reconstructed in the Indo Saracenic style architecture. It has retained its beauty since many years.
