Gowthameswarar Temple

Location

Sri Gowthameswarar Temple is situated in the south west region of Mahamaham tank in Kumbakonam. This temple has an important place in the Maha Kumbamela held once in 12 years in Kumbakonam. The religious devotees visiting Kumbakonam unfailingly offer prayers at this temple after taking bath in the Mahamaham tank. This temple is dedicated to God Yagnobhaveetheswar and Goddess Sundaranayagi, the prime deity's consort.

Kasi Viswanathar Temple

Location

Kasi Viswanathar Temple is located at in the neighborhood of the Mahamaham tank in the holy town of Kumbakonam. As the name suggests this Shiva temple has the prime deity as Kasi Viswanathar accompanied with Lord's consort Visalakshi. The temple architecture is praise worthy and showcases the ancient style of South Indian style of construction and design.

Mahamaham Tank

Location

Mahamaham Tank is the integral part of the grandeur religious festival Kumbha Mela festival celebrated once in every 12 years in the temple town of Kumbakonam. The devotees consider the holy dip at the Mahamaham tank on the Mahamaham festival day as sacred, which purifies the mind and body.

Mahamaham Tank is believed to be the place where all holy rivers in India Ganges, Yamuna, Sarasvati River, Sarayu, Godavari, Mahanadi, Narmada, Pavoshnl and Kaveri meet together. Nageswarar Temple

Location

Nageswarar temple, also known as Nageswara Swami Temple, in Kumbakonam is one of the most impressive and the most ancient Shiva temples in the region. This small temple is the abode of serpent gods as well.

It is one of the finest specimen of Early Chola temples built during 907-940 AD. The Serpent God Adisesha and Lord Surya had worshiped Lord Shiva in this temple. It is believed that Adisesha had undergone penance at this temple. Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati blessed Adusesha with enough strength.

Ramaswamy Temple

Location

The Ramaswamy temple is located at the heart of the Kumbakonam and has a unique idol in the form of Lord Rama and his consort Sita in the Pattabhishekam Posture. The idol was surrounded by Lord Hanuman, Rama’s brothers Lakshmana, Shatrugna and Bharatha.

King Raghunayak, who ruled Tanjore during 1614-1640 AD constructed this temple. It is believed that the Rama-Sita idol was found in a holy tank in Darasuram near Kumbakonam. The coronation scene in this temple is the prime attraction of the pilgrims to this temple.

Sarabhumurti Temple (Kampahareswarar)

Sarabhumurti Temple (Kampahareswarar) is located at Tribhuvanam near to Kumbakonam. The Kampahareswarar temple has Lord Shiva as prime deity. The Lord of this temple is known as Sarabhumurti, a rare idol combining the features of bird and man. The temple is built by the Chola King Tribhuvana Chakravarti. This temple is rated as the true specimen and masterpiece of Chola style of architecture.

Sarangapani Temple

Sarabhumurti Temple (Kampahareswarar) is located at Tribhuvanam near to Kumbakonam. The Kampahareswarar temple has Lord Shiva as prime deity. The Lord of this temple is known as Sarabhumurti, a rare idol combining the features of bird and man. The temple is built by the Chola King Tribhuvana Chakravarti. This temple is rated as the true specimen and masterpiece of Chola style of architecture.

Sarkarai Padithurai Ghat

Location

The famous temple town of Kumbakonam located on the banks of River Kaveri has many holy bathing ghats across the region. Sarkarai Padithurai Ghat or Chakkarai Padithurai is one among these holy ghats to take dips to remove the sins of life. This holy ghat has important place in the Kumbabhishekam Mahamaham. Devotees take holy dips in this ghat to complete the Kumbakonam visit.

Other bathing ghats on the banks of Kaveri include Amma Mandapam in Srirangam, Bhagavath Padithurai in Kumbakonam, Pushya Mandapa Padithurai in Thiruvaiyaru and Thula Kattam in Mayavaram.
