Katarmal Sun Temple

Location

Katarmal located near Almora is home to the 2nd largest Sun temple in the country, the main one being at Konark in Orissa. The main temple at the complex dates back to over 800 years. There are about 45 smaller shrines that surround this main temple.

The main idol of the Sun god is however not at the temple any more; it is at the National Museum in Delhi. The temples here are however in ruins due to years of neglect.

Katarmal nearby Almora has the second important Sun temple in the country, the first being the Konark Sun Temple in Orissa. This 800-year-old temple complex has one main temple, surrounded by 45 smaller shrines.

Methodist Ashram

Location

Established in 1930 by Stanley Jones, a great missionary and a friend of Mahatma Gandhi, Methodist Ashram is situated at the entry point of Sat Tal banks. The historical importance and fine colonial architecture of the place make it a popular destination. The famous ‘St. John’s Church’ is also situated within the premises of the ashram.

Sattal Christian Ashram

Location

One among the inevitable part of Sattal tour must be the visit to the famous Sattal Christian Ashram, which is situated in the majestic banks of the gorgeous lakes. A former tea estate had been converted in to a much acclaimed institution to spread the virtues of Christianity among the Indian populace, this Ashram needs special rendering. Stanley Jones an evangelist and a missionary was the driving force behind this prestigious Ashram.

Jalagandeeswarar Temple

Location

Jalagandeeswarar Temple stays in the womb of Vellore Fort, which by itself is a fine place to visit. It has the mythological back ground of history underneath and a great working story cultivating the trust of people even today. The place has great sculptures encarved from stone and which depict the live spirit of the god within. It is a great piece of craftsmanship and has several sculptures which are indeed a masterpiece.

The temple has a giant open ground where the people can have their prayers and holy rituals. And at times even marriages can be well organized in front of the temple gathering the benedictions of the god one believes in.

Velavan Temple

Location

Velvan temple is other prime attraction for tourists in Yelagiri. Dedicated to Lord Murugan, this temple is construction atop a hillock, with a giant statue of Gadothgajan in front. During the months of July-August, colorful festivals are organized at the temple premise. These festivals very well displays the vibrant culture of the region.
Velavan temple was constructed in the memory of Lord Murugan and is located on the tip of the mountains of yelagiri. It is a best view point to have a look at the wonderful large plains lying beneath from the top of the mountain. The temple bells ringing on the top of the mountain helps keep life going and maintains the essence of culture live upright even these days.

Jalakanteshwara Temple

Location

Jalakanteshwara Temple was built in the year 1550 A.D. The temple is a small architectural wonder of Vijayanagar. The temple is within the fort complex and the walls of the temple are full of carvings of Nandi and small gopuras. You will find amazing work in the corridors as well. The temple was considered a masterpiece at the time of its construction and now it has become a marvel on this land of Vellore.
