Mahishadal Rajbari

Location

Mahishadal Rajbari is a huge estate belonging to the 16th century. Within its compounds, there are two palaces and the famous Gopaljew temple. The palaces are maintained in pristine condition with all the antique furniture and wildlife trophies. It is a heritage site worth a visit.

Mahishadal Rajbari is an erstwhile estate of Janardan Upadhyay of Uttar Pradesh. At present, the site has become a major tourist attraction that features a rich collection of stuffed bodies of animals, painting and furniture.

The Mahishadal Raj estate houses two palaces, wherein the old palace was built around 1840 AD. The other palace was put up later in 1937, which is a dwelling place of the successors of the royal family.

Satkhanda Mahal

Location

Nawab Muhamad Ali Shah built this seven-storied palace in Italian and French style. Though the palace is in ruins, the splendor of the architecture is still visible. This tower like palace was built as a watch tower to keep watch on various buildings in Lucknow in those days.

A putrefying of 67 meter red-brick watchtower, located just opposite to the Hussainabad Imambara is a splendor of medieval architecture. The structure shows a curios blend of French and Italian style structural designs. This amazing citadel was constructed during the time of Nawab Muhamad Ali Shah, but his untimely demise in 1840 blocked its construction. Famed as the tallest tower in India, Satkianda, is believed to be built as a mark of respect to Sir George Couper, a progressive Governor of UP.

Saddat Ali Tomb

Location

In front of the famous Begum Hazrat Mahal park are the tombs of Saddat Ali and his Begum Khurshidzadi. These tombs are built in the Italian style and are marvels of architecture. The tombs were built by Gaziuddin Haidar, the son of Saddat Ali. The lush green lawns around the tomb were witness to fierce rebel fighting at the time of the 1857 revolt.

Farangi Mahal

Location

This building belonged to a French businessman by name Neal, who had to given up his entire trade and belongings as per the royal decree. As the then law provides confiscation of the properties of a foreigner, all the properties of Neal automatically went in to the government treasury. Later during the reign of Aurangazeeb, this flamboyant house was given to his Islamic consultant Mullah Asad bin Qutab Shaheed and to his brother Mullah Asad bin Qutab uddin Shaheed. They developed this house into a full fledged Islamic school, which was often compared with Oxford and the Cambridge universities.

Rani Mahal

Location

This was the palace of Rani Laxmibai. A fine collection of sculptures belonging to the period between 9th and 12th centuries A.D. has been housed here by the Archaeological Survey of India.

A former palace, now converted in to a museum, Rani Mahal boast of a rich history that arise the patriotic feeling of every Indian. Its highly decorated walls with exquisite paintings arrest the vision of the onlooker. The museum also has an extensive compilation of sculptures and paintings of 9th and 12th centuries.

Gulab Bari

Location

Gulab Bari or Golap Bari (Rose Garden) in Faizabad is a beautiful rose garden which has been neatly maintained and cultivated. The garden spread across the entire zone that houses the tombs of Shuja-ud-daulah, the 3rd Nawab of Awadh and his parents.
