Shivappa Naik Palace

Location

Situated on the banks of river Tunga in the busy lanes of Shimoga city. Shivappa Naik of Keladi built the 16th century palace. A good architectural piece built with rose wood, the palace is equipped with a museum, which has several interesting and rare archaeological collections of stone carvings and antiques of Keladi period. Recovered idols of Hoysala and Chalukya period from the early 16th century to late 18th century are displayed here.

Location

A 16th century place situated 19 Kms from Shimoga. This was also known as "Beendanoor"in the 16th century. This place was also capital of Keladi rulers and later on was captured by Hyder Ali. Other places of interest are Shivappanaika palace, Neelakenteshwara temple, Devagana tank and Gudde Venkataramana Swamy temple.

Fort

Location

On top of the hills that surround Raichur, there exists a massive hill fort. This fort has a double row of walls. Near the inner wall stands the tomb of Pir Sailani Sahid, a Muslim saint.

Bala Hisar

Location

The Citadel is the landmark of Raichur. Located on the top of a hill, the Bala Hisar houses a huge gun that measures more than 20 feet in length, 4 feet in circumference and has a bore whose diameter is 5 inches.

Khas Bach

Location

There is also huge well by the name of Khas Bach. This well, made of solid masonry, has steps leading to its base. In the centre of the well, stands a platform which can be approached by a casuse way from the west.

The other important sites in the town are the Daftar ki Masjid, a mosque; Ek-Minar-ki-Masjid, a mosque with just one minaret and Jami Masjid, which is the largest mosque in Raichur.

Tipu's Summer Residence

Location

Tipu’s summer residence is a palace which was completed in the year 1791. The construction of the palace was started by Haidar Ali and was completed by Tipu Sultan. The palace was used by the Sultan as his summer resort and he named it as Tashk-e-Jannat which means envy of heaven.

It is constructed mainly of wood. The archways and towers are so elaborately graved that it shows the technique of architecture prevalent in those days. The ceiling and the walls are covered with paintings. These paintings are in a faded state. General public are not allowed into the palace.

Mysore Palace

Location

One of the most magnificent buildings located in the heart of the city is the Mysore Palace. Spacious halls called Mantaps can be seen in the Palace. Paintings and architectural beauty décor the hall. The palace is a fantabulous assemblage of Indo-Saracen architecture.

The palace gives a clean evidence that a royal structure existed during the period of Yaduraya and Krishnaraya when they came to Mysore in 1399 AD.

Madikeri Fort

Location

Madikeri Fort was first built as a mud fort by Mudduraja in the last quarter of the 17th century. He also built a palace inside the fort. It was eventually rebuilt in granite by Tipu Sultan who named the site as Jaffarabad. A 19th century fort that witnessed several heroic battle, this Fort now houses a temple, a chapped and a small museum. The view of Madikeri is, quite simply, stunning. The beautiful now houses Govt. Offices of the District Administration.

Madikeri Fort, built of brick and mortar, had witnessed several fierce battles. In 1790, Doddavira Rajendra took control of the fort. The palace was renovated by Lingarajendra Wodeyar II in 1812-1814.
