Orang National Park

Location

Orang National Park was established in 1985 and was declared as a national park on 13th April 1999. It is called as mini Kaziranga National Park due to the similar landscape, including streams, grasslands and marshes. Along with the great Indian one-horned rhinoceros, the other animals that can be seen here are the pigmy hog, elephant, wild buffalo and tiger. It lies 72 km of Tezpur and is a home to wildlife such as one-horned rhinoceros, buffalo, leopard, barkinng dear, tiger and sambhar.

Dehing Patkai Wildlife Sanctuary

Location

The Dehing Patkai Wildlife Sanctuary is among the tropical wet evergreen forests of Assam. The sanctuary covers an area of around 111.19 sq km and has various animals such as tiger, elephant, hornbill, pig-tailed macaque and hoolock gibbon.
It is home to a number of beautiful and rare birds, such as white-winged wood duck, slender-billed vulture, white-backed vulture, white-cheeked hill partridge and grey-peacock pheasant. Other birds like green-imperial pigeon, pale-capped pigeon, rufus necked hornbill and nuthatch are also found in this sanctuary.

Hollongapar Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary

Location

Hollongapar Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary is a small sanctuary, covering an area of around 20.98 sq. km. The sanctuary is named so as it is a habitat of the hoolock gibbon, the only ape species found in India. It has semi-evergreen forests and evergreen patches of tea gardens and offers shelter to varied flora and fauna.

The sanctuary is home to various mammals, including elephants, tigers, leopards, Assamese macaques, pig tailed macaques, capped langurs and jungle cats. The Indian civet, giant squirrel, sambar, wild pigs and barking deer can also be spotted inside the sanctuary.

Laokhowa Wildlife Sanctuary

Location

Laokhowa Wildlife Sanctuary covers an area of around 70.13 sq km and lies on the southern bank of the Brahmaputra River. It forms an integral part of the Laokhowa-Burachapori eco-system and is home to rhinoceros and wild buffaloes. The reserve area of the sanctuary has high humidity, making it suitable for tropical animals.

Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary

Location

The Chakrasila Wildlife Sanctuary is spread over an area of 45.50 sq km and is home to the golden langur. The sanctuary also has about 273 species of birds, 14 species of reptiles, 11 species of amphibians and 60 species of fish.

The upper and middle reaches of the sanctuary are covered with mixed deciduous forests, whereas, the lower reaches are covered with sal coppice regeneration. The sanctuary is popular for trekking, birdwatching and wildlife photography.

Bura-Chapori Wildlife Sanctuary

Location

The Bura-Chapori Wildlife Sanctuary is situated on the southern banks of Brahmaputra River in the Sonitpur District, at 30 km from Tezpur. It covers a total area of 44.06 sq. km and its surroundings comprise wet alluvial grassland, riparian and semi-evergreen forests with a river system. This sanctuary is also a part of the Laokhowa-Burachapori eco-system.

The fauna in this sanctuary mainly include migratory birds and it is also known to be the natural habitat for Bengal florican bird species. Other animal species in the place includes civet cat, Asiatic buffalo, one horned rhinos, wild boar and other animals. It also has many varieties of fishes, insects and reptiles.

Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary

Location

Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Jalpaiguri District of West Bengal, around 93.1 km away from Jalpaiguri city. Located at an altitude of about 61 metres above sea level, the Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary stretches around an area of about 114 sq. km.

The town is famous for one-horned rhinos, royal Bengal tigers, wild elephants, sambhar, barking deer, spotted deer and hog deer, wild pig, bisons and a number of birds and peafowls. Situated in Alipurduar Sub-Division of Jalpaiguri District, the sanctuary also houses Bengal florican, hornbill, racket-tailed drongo and paradise flycatcher, among others. Elephants and Safari Jeeps are available to tour the entire sanctuary.
