Siju Bird Sanctuary

Location

Siju Bird Sanctuary is located near the Siju Caves and River Simsang in Meghalaya, which is home to many rare and protected birds along with other animals. Birdwatchers can also spot the migratory Siberian duck at this sanctuary during the winter season.

Nokrek National Park

Location

Nokrek National Park is located at a distance of about 2 km from the Tura Peak, within the West Garo Hills District of the Meghalaya State. The National Park has been named after the Nokrek Mountain Peak, which is about 1,412 m in height. This peak is considered to be the highest mountain peak in the Garo Hills and is an originating point of many rivers and streams, including the River Simsang. Nokrek National Park, located at distance of 45 km from Tura in west Garo hills district, is one of the most famous national parks of the state. This national park is rich in varieties of flora and fauna, which range from wild elephants and orchids to citrus-indica endemic and horn bill. In addition, Pheasant, Hollock, Python and Leopard Cat, can also be spotted in this national park.

Hornbill

Hornbill is a site situated within Namdapha, which is famous for spotting four hornbill species, namely white-throated brown hornbill and great hornbill. Besides hornbill, tourists can also spot white-tailed flycatchers, streaked wren-babblers, large scimitar babblers and pied falconets.

Miao Mini Zoo

Location

Miao Mini Zoo is home to animal species like hoolock gibbons, Assamese macaques, stump-tailed macaque, pig-tailed macaque and slow loris. Tourists visiting the zoo can also spot Himalayan palm civet, porcupines and leopard cats. This zoo is located just opposite the Field Director’s Office.

Miao Reserve Forest

Location

Miao Reserve Forest is located towards the west of Namdapha National Park. This reserve forest is ideal for birdwatching, as tourists can catch a glimpse of wreathed and rufous-necked hornbills. Streaked Wren-babbler and Golden-crested Myna can also be spotted in this forest.

This reserve is under the administrative control of Jairampur Forest Division. The reserve forest can only be visited only after seeking permission from the Divisional Forest Officer of Jairampur Forest Division.

Dr. Daying Ering Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary

Location

Dr. Daying Ering Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary covers an extensive area of 190 sq. km. Around 75% land area of the sanctuary is covered by alluvial grassland, while 15% is wooded. The western, eastern and northern parts of the sanctuary are surrounded by the Siang River. This sanctuary extends into the state of Assam towards the south, where it known as the Kobo Chapori.

Mouling National Park

Location

Mouling National Park is situated in the Upper Siang District of Arunachal Pradesh. This national park is located close to the town of Jengging. Covering an area of 500 sq. km of semi-evergreen forest, this park is inhabited by animal species like tiger, panther, elephant, hog dear, python and barking deer. Other animals like sambar deer, buffalo and red-panda are also found within this park.

Three kinds of goat-antelopes, namely takin, serow and coral, can be spotted here. This park also attracts numerous birdwatchers as it is home to several pheasants.

Kane Wildlife Sanctuary

Location

Kane Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in the West Siang District, which in vicinity of Along. The sanctuary is spread over an area of 55 sq. km and has diverse flora and fauna. Some of the animal species that can be seen in this sanctuary include deer, elephant and small cats.

Travellers can easily reach Kane Wildlife Sanctuary by boarding buses or hiring taxis from Along. The best time to visit this sanctuary is between the months of October to April.

Pabitora Wildlife Sanctuary

Location

The Pabitora Wildlife Sanctuary is a major tourist attraction of Marigaon. According to a belief, the forest was named after Pabitora, the daughter of the King of Mayong. In 1971, the forest was announced as a reserved forest, inhabited by the endangered one-horned rhinoceros. It was later declared as the Pabitora Wildlife Sanctuary in 1987. The sanctuary covers an area of around 38.83 hectares.
