Nokrek National Park

Location

Nokrek National Park is located at a distance of about 2 km from the Tura Peak, within the West Garo Hills District of the Meghalaya State. The National Park has been named after the Nokrek Mountain Peak, which is about 1,412 m in height. This peak is considered to be the highest mountain peak in the Garo Hills and is an originating point of many rivers and streams, including the River Simsang. Nokrek National Park, located at distance of 45 km from Tura in west Garo hills district, is one of the most famous national parks of the state. This national park is rich in varieties of flora and fauna, which range from wild elephants and orchids to citrus-indica endemic and horn bill. In addition, Pheasant, Hollock, Python and Leopard Cat, can also be spotted in this national park.

The Nokrek National Park is located close to the National Citrus Gene Sanctuary-cum-Biosphere which has some of the rarest animals and trees species. The national park can easily be reached via the Tura-Asanang-Daribokgre Road or the Daribokgre village.

In May 2009, Nokrek National Park was added by UNESCO to its list of Biosphere Reserves. This reserve is inhabited by numerous animals, including the red-panda, Asian elephant, tiger, marbled cat and pig-tailed macaque.
