Yana temple

Location

The Yana temple which is a well-known pilgrim spot, is about 2 kms trek from the Yana village. Part of the reserved forests of Shimoga district, Yana temple can be reached through the dense evergreen forest. The temple is built below rocky cliffs that provide a beautiful view. The path leading to the village continues about 3 kms beyond the temple through the dense evergreen forest.

Shevaroy Temple

Location

The Shevaroy temple is situated on top of the flat-topped Shevaroy hills and is dedicated to Lord Shevaroyan. The temple consists of a narrow and dark cave which is impenetrable and the idols of Lord Shevaroyan and Goddess Kaveri are placed inside it. The native tribals come in hundreds and celebrate their annual festival in the premises of this temple during the month of May every year.

Wallajah Mosque (Big Mosque)

Location

This Mosque, also known as Big Mosque constructed by Muhammad Ali Walajah, Nawab of the Carnatic during 1749AD to 1795 A.D., is a historical landmark in Chennai. The building is a commanding structure of symmetry and an example of architectural splendor with an impressive facade. The Mosque is placed in widespread grounds, which are being used as a place for religious and cultural functions and activities. The Meelad Committee in the Mosque celebrates the Prophet's birthday every year in these grounds.

Visvaroopa Baktha Anjaneyaar Temple

Location

Visvaroopa Baktha Anjaneyaar Temple is located at Nanganallur, on the outer reaches of Chennai. The temple was consummated the Kumbabishekam in 1995 by Kanchi Paramacharyar and the main deity is a 32 foot idol of Lord Hanuman, or famed as Sri Anjaneyar, believed to have special power and is considered a healer. The main feature and attraction of this 32 feet idol is that it was molded out of a single rock. Other deities worshipped here are Lord Ganesha, Lord Krishna with his consorts Bhama and Rukmini, Lord Rama, Lakshmana, Sita and also Lord Raghavendra.

Varasidi Vinayakar Temple

Location

Varasiddhi Vinayakar Temple, dedicated to Lord Ganesha known by the name Varasiddhi Vinayaka, is located at Besant Nagar in Chennai. Other deities worshipped here include Lord Muruga in the boy stature knwn as Balasubramanyan, Sri Sathyanarayana Perumal, Sri Surya Narayanar, Lord Dakshinamurthy, Gajakesari Lalithambikai and serpent god Nagaraja. It is supposed that the deity fulfills the needs of the devotees, who offer their worship here. This is one of the notable attractions in Chennai and is one of the revered religious places Chennai.

Vadapalani Murugan Temple

Location

Vadapalani Murugan (Andavar) Temple is a highly respected shrine situated at Vadapalani, means North Palani, in Chennai and is worth visiting. The temple enshrines Lord Velayudha (Muruga) as the main presiding deity. The wonderful 4 ft sculpture of the presiding deity is spectacular of all eyes. Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvathi, wife of Lord Shiva and Lord Ganesha (Son of Shiva and Parvathi) are also worshipped here. Lord Hanuman's image is inscribed in a pillar. Butter offered by the devotees is applied to this Lord Anjaneya and the devotees pray for the fulfillment of their desires.

Thousand Lights Mosque

Location

Thousand Lights Mosque, a multi-domed mosque located near Anna flyover in Chennai built in 19th century in the ground donated by Nawab Wallajah and renovated in 1981, is a revered religious place for Muslim community. It is called 'thousand lights' because more than one thousand lamps are illuminated in the Assembly Hall of this mosque. It has two big minarets as big as 64 feet. The mosque encloses a beautiful library, a burial ground and convenient guesthouses. This multi-domed mosque, with sayings from the Holy Koran painted on its walls, attracts many visitors and comes alive during the annual Moharram festival. This is a very important religious place for Muslims. Lots of tourists visit this Mosque to offer prayers as well as to see the amazing minarets and illumination.

Thirumalai Thirupathi Devasthanam Temple

Thronged by millions of people daily, the world famous Shri Venkateshwara Temple is placed very high at Tirupati in Thirumalai. This is most celebrated abode of Lord Vishnu and located on the seventh peak of Venkata Hill known as Venkatachala of the Tirumala Hillocks and lies on the southern banks of Sri Swami Pushkarini. The designation, Venkateshwara, also called the Lord of the Seven Hills and also known as Venkatachala Pathi means Lord of the Venkata Hill, is obtained by the Lord's regime over Venkatachala. The Hindu mythological verses tells that in the Kali Yuga, one can attain moksha, only by worshipping Sri Venkateshwara.

St Thomas Orthodox Cathedral

Location

St Thomas Mount Church, also known as St Thomas Orthodox cathedral built in 1523 by the Portuguese, is located near Chennai International Airport. It is situated on a mount or hillock where St Thomas, the missionary, was lost his life and thus the mount was named after him. In between the 14th and 15th centuries, the church fell to ruins and the Portuguese moved the remains of the saint to a new tomb and built a new church. But in 1893, the church was demolished again and a new cathedral was built in 1896.

St Peters & St Paul Orthodox Chapel

Location

St. Peters & St. Pauls Orthodox chapel is located in Koyambedu, a vibrant and dynamic market place in Chennai. This is one of the oldest and prominent churches in Chennai came into being in 1858. Located at the center of Purasawalkam, Vepery and Choolai areas, the church is located in a place that is renowned for the Karnataka War fought by Tipu Sultan against the British. It is a CSI (Church of South India) church, which holds regular worship services.
