Jallianwala Bagh

Location

The massacre of the innocent people at the Jallianwala Bagh, Amritsar, perpetrated by General Dyer on March 13, 1919, has no parallel in history in barbarousness and cruelty. It forms an important landmark in India's struggle for freedom. The flame of liberty lighted there set the whole of the country aflame. It gave great impetus to the Satyagrah movement, which ultimately won freedom for the country on August 15, 1947.

Khandagiri Caves

Location

Situated adjacent to the Udayagiri caves, the 2000 years old Khandagiri Jain Caves can be reached by going up a steep flight of steps. Caves 1 and 2 of this group are popularly called as Parrot caves since it has carvings of birds on the doorway. Cave 3, presents the awesome pictures of elephants, women and a bird carrying flowers.

Udayagiri Caves

Location

Magnificently carved caves placed on the top of a hill, Udayagiri Caves are 2000 years old. There are 44 caves in all, which include both natural and others are man-made. A flight of steps and an ancient ramp rising gradually from the foot of the hill paves the access towards these caves.

The largest of all the caves is renowned as the Rani Gumpha or ‘Queen's Cave’ and it features some of the complicated carved sculptures. Other conspicuous structures are Caves 3 and 4, which are double storied caves, and they features sculptures of a lion holding its prey, elephants with snakes wrapped around them and pillars decorated with pairs of unusual winged animals.

A popular tourist spot, Udayagiri caves remain open from 8 am to 6 pm.

Old Jetty

Location

Old Jetty in Ruin is a monument fro the majestic glory of the once bustling port in Orissa, Gopalpur-on-Sea. The ruins of the old jetty, built during the medieval period, are seen in the beach area, leaving memory of bubbling activities of trade and commerce. It was from this jetty many sailors started their journey to other countries across the Indian Sea.

Stone Revetment

Location

The ‘Stone Revetments’, situated on the banks of Mahanadi River, were constructed by King Marakata Keshari in the eleventh century. An architectural as well as engineering wonder, these Stone Revetments stand as a proof of the advanced technology of Indians so long back also. These revetments served as the protection of Cuttack during floods, helping the city attain the status of the capital.

One among the marvels of ancient engineering skill, the stone revetment on the banks of Kathjuri river, allures the onlookers with its perfection. This centuries old stone formation is a popular destination in Cuttack, which bears true testimonial to the technical skill and logical thinking of the Oriyans of 11th century.

Barabati Fort

Location

Barabati Fort, situated in Cuttack, is one of the most sought-after tourist attractions of Orissa. Situated on the bank of Mahanadi River, this fort lies on the western side of the city. It is located at a distance of about 8 km from the heart of Cuttack. Barabati fort once housed an illustrious nine-storied palace. The local authorities have now taken over the task of maintaining this royal structure. Barabati fort is spread over an area of 102 acres.

Champanagar

Location

Champanagar is located quiet closeby the ruins of the Vikramshila University and was visited by Lord Buddha. Here, He delivered sermons on Kandaraka Sutta from the Middla length Discourse and the famous Sonadanda Sutta from the Long Discourses. Sarovan talab is the prime Buddhist attraction here.

Tibetan dormitory

Location

As one descend down the excavation site, one would find the remains of Tibetan dormitory, built on a 60 feet wide platform. This dormitory is being further destroyed due to the alkalisation of the bricks. Two of its columns have already been damaged. Adjacent to it lies the meditation house which is in complete ruins, surrounded by overgrown grass and thick layers of dust. The terracotta on its wall is also decaying.
The soil around three of its main entrances is still to be dug out. The 60-feet high Stupa is built on a 300-feet wide platform. More than 300 terracotta figurines were fixed around this Stupa. The excavation of the Hostels around it remains incomplete.
