Mahendragiri

Location

Amidst rich scenic beauty of the evergreen forests, Mahendragiri, 5,000 feet high, stands in its unrivalled glory in the Parlakhemundi subdivision of the district of Gajapati. The hill is associated with mythological stories from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. It finds mention in the works of poets Kalidas and Radhanath Ray. The rivulet Mahendra Tanaya flows down the hill with her usual trickling note. Archaeological remains at Mahendragiri make an interesting study for the scholars. Sivaratri is the main festival here, which draws a large crowd.

Is is a large village situated 5 kms away from the block headquarter of Pandaul. The village is noted for its temple of Ugaranath and traditional association with famous poet, Vidyapati. As the legend says, Vidyapati was such a great devotee of Lord Shiva that the latter began to serve Vidyapati as his servant named Ugana.

Location

A village situated 9 kms from Madhubani district headquarters. The Village is noted for its Shiva Temple, also known as “Kapileswarsthan”. Numerous devotees congregate at the temple every Monday and particularly in the month of Shravan. A large fair is also held on the occasion of “Mahashivratri”.

Mandar Hill

Location

Located 30 km from Bhagalpur, Mandar Hill is well known for its mythological background. The hill finds special mention in Hindu Mythology, according to which, ‘Samudra-Manthan’ was carried out in the place. According to the legends, Panchjanya - the conch shell used in Mahabharata War - was also discovered here, in the Sank Kund. Mandar Hill is equally honored by the Jains who believe that their 12th Tirthankara attained nirvana on its peak. Apart from the mythological significance, the hill is also famous for rock cut sculptures, depicting various Brahmanical images.

Kathikund

On Dumka-Pakur road , at a distance of around 25 kms. From the main town there is a block of kathikund. This place with very old establishment of sericulture and khadi production is surrounded by range hills and deep forests with a river passing between the valleys. This topographical background provides numerous sites small and big for picnic. Some of the important spots in and around the Kathikund are Nargunj, Saldoha Laprocy mission, Mahuagadhi and Gopikandar. The site under Gambhara bridge is a fascinating point for outdoor photography.
