The historic road of Stilwell is located in the town of Jairampur in the Changlang District. This road was constructed by the Americans during the Second World War from Ledo in Assam, which is one of the rail heads of the Bengal-Assam railway line.
This road passes from the upper Brahmaputra to Burma Road connecting to Kunming. It winds up the passes of 9000 ft Patkai Range and emerges at Shindbwiyang and then Myitkyina. Then it crosses the broad bowl of the Upper Chindwin, which forms the threads of the Hukawng and Mogaung valleys and goes down to Bhamo and to the Burma Road connecting Kunming.
Originally the road was called as the Ledo Road but later it was named after the General Joseph Warren Stilwell, who was the Chief of Staff to Allied Forces in China-Burma-India theatre. This road was constructed under his direct supervision.
