A majestic hill stands on the eastern flank of Tura, the largest town in the Garo hills area of Meghalaya. It rises 872 m above sea level over looking Tura. A tourist-bungalow, an observatory and a Cinchona-plantation are located at Tura Peak and its environs. A spectacular view of the lower Brahmaputra Valley as well as the golden yellow plains of Bangladesh is available all year round to visitors coming to Tura Peak.
The famous limestone caves of Siju are located close to Naphak Lake and the Simsang Game Reserve. The formation of stalagmites & stalaclites in these caves resemble those of the Blue Grotto in the Isle of Capris.
Naphak Lake is located 12 kms from Tura. It is ideal for fishing and bird watching with the river Simsang flowing nearby.
Cloaked in natural beauty, Khasi Hills are a part of the Garo-Khasi range in the north eastern state Meghalaya. It is also a part of the Patkai range and of the Meghalaya subtropical forests eco-region. This region is occupied by Khasi tribes of Meghalaya, which are traditionally in various chieftainships, petty states known as the Khasi Hill States.
1,545 metre, 20 kms from Shillong, regarded as sacred by the Hynniewtrep people, is set amidst a beautiful scenic view against the backdrop of a sacred forest. This `Navel of Heaven` as per Khasi mythology is a heavenly peak, which offers to fill the spiritual void and emptiness, to those who seek and desire solace and peace of mind. Situated at a height of 1,343m, 20-km from Shillong, regarded as sacred by the Hynniewtrep people, is set amidst a beautiful scenic view against the backdrop of sacred forest.
Approximately 10 kms. from the city, this point offers a panoramic view of the spreading city below. The Shillong Peak is situated nearby and is the highest point in Meghalaya with an altitude of 1960 meters above sea level.
The Shillong peak stands at a whopping 2000mtr above sea level. The peak dedicated to the city is also the highest point in the state. An ideal picnic spot, the Shillong Peak offer breathtaking bird's eye view of the city and the scattered villages around the Peak. A sanctum offering curtsy U Shulong is located at the peak's summit. The spiritual pastor of Mylliem State offers prayers at the sanctum during springtime. If the view of the human abode below is breathtaking during daytime, then the view at nighttime in absolutely awe inspiring.
At a distance of 15-km from Shillong on the Shillong - Jowai highway is the awe-inspiring Rengthiam Falls. Located in the mawlyngad village, 2 kms. Away at pepbah, this spectacular waterfall untouched in its natural beauty and surroundings will give any visitor the excitement of visiting the unknown in this unique corner waiting to be discovered.
The story goes like this. A Khasi prisoner, bored with the penitentiary routine requested the warden for some creative release by permitting him to create some construction over the Wards Lake. He was permitted to do so and what stands today is a marvelous site of the Wards Lake or Polok's Lake as the locals prefer to call it. This century old picturesque (horseshoe-shaped) artificial lake lying beneath the Raj Bhavan (Governor's Residence) is located at the heart of the city and is extremely popular for its garden walks and boating.
