Shiva Temple

Location

Kunkeshwar is famous for its ancient Shiva temple. The temple is believed to have been built around 1100 AD by Yadava rulers. The intricate carvings at the temple are typical of the contemporary Konkan style. The temple faces east and has the Arabian Sea in the background. It is believed Shivaji, the legendary ruler of Maharashtra, used to make frequent visits to worship at this temple. The temple is also known as “Daskshin Kashi” meaning “Kashi of the south”. The Hindu festival of Mahashivrathri is celebrated here for three days with great pomp and attracts several devotees.

There is an ancient legend associated the Shiv lingam here. It is said that there was a cow that used to go to the jungle and milk a stone there instead of yielding the milk to its master. The furious master followed the cow to the jungle one day and hit his axe onto the stone. The stone started giving out blood when hit. The master immediately realized that this was not an ordinary stone but actually a Shiv Lingam.

To the east of Kunkeshwar temple there is the Kunkeshwar cave where several idols especially Ganesh idols sculptured on black stones can be found.

A famous temple, dedicated to lord Siva, Kunkeshwar temple is located at the Sindhudurga district of Maharashtra. The temple was built in the year 1100 by the yadava rulers. A classic example of Konkani sculpture and architectur, this enchanting pilgrimage center is also known as ‘Dakshin Kashi. Presence of Arabian Sea in the backdrop attributes a special charm to the serene atmosphere of this temple.

Mahasivarathri an important festival of Lord Siva is celebrated here with great pomp and splendor. Lakhs of devotees gather here to attend the three days fair conducted in connection with the festival.
