Sannihit Sarovar

Location

One of the most venerated sites in Kurushekthra is the Sannihit Sarovar, which is believed to be the meeting point of seven sacred Saraswathies. It is believed to be the abode of Lord Vishnu. Devotees seldom spare a chance to get a dip here since it holds the myth that a dip in the holy waters of this Sarovar takes away all their sins. It is believed that bathing on the day of Amavasi or on the day of an eclipse would fetch the fortune of an aswamedha yajna. Sarovar premises also holds small shrines of Dhruv Narayan, Sri Hanuman, Lord Vishnu, Dhruv Bhagat, Laxmi Narayan and Goddess Durga

Pehowa

Location

Prayers and 'pind daan' for the unnatural deaths is recommended here. By the side of this renovated kund lie small temples of Dhruv Narayan, Lord Vishnu, Laxmi Narayan, Dhruv Bhagat, Lord Hanuman and Mother Goddess Durga. It is also known as the 'Prithudaka Tirtha'.

Narkatari Temple

Location

It was here that Bhishma Pitamah (grandfather of Pandavas and Kauravas) lay down on a bed of arrows. Don’t expect to see the bed, although a temple now stands here. Close by is the Banganga (or Bhishma Kund), a water tank. Legend says that when Bhishma Pitamah was dying on his bed of arrows and was thirsty, Arjuna shot an arrow into the ground and out spouted water.

Nabhi Kamal

Location

Another tank, but here Brahma was born from the `navel of a lotus’.
There’s also a Prachin (ancient) Shiva mandir (temple), Birla mandir, Sanmith Sarovar (tank), Bhim kund, Saraswati kund, Panch Mukhi Hanuman (a statue of Lord Hanuman featuring him with five faces) and Raja ka Tila (a mound with a little fortress).

Jyotisar

Location

One of the most revered of holy centres of Kurukshetra is Jyotisara. Renovated recently, it retains its divinity as the birthplace of the holy Bhagwad Gita. A 'Vat' (banyan) tree stands on a raised plinth.

This is the birth place of the holy scripture of Bhagwad Gita. This site lies around 12 kms from Kurukshetra on the Pehowa road. Jyotisar attracts tourists with its fine water body, bathing ghats and small temples.

Gurudwaras & Rajghat

Location

The gurudwara, dedicated to the sixth Sikh guru Hargobind, stands near the Sinnihit tank. The eight Sikh guru Harkishan performed a miracle of making a deaf and dumb boy recite verses from the Gita. The ninth guru, Teg Bahadur, set camp near Sthaneshwar tirtha where a gurudwara now stands. The Gurudwara Rajghat, the big daddy of all the Kurukshetra gurudwaras, is located near the main bank of the Klurukshetra tank. This was built in the memory of the Guru Gobin Singh who came here with his mother in tow.

Brahma Sarovar

Location

Dedicated to Brahma, the god who created our planet. Small temples and ghats surround the lake which is a very holy one. It is said that a dip in its waters during a lunar eclipse purifies the body and soul, and going by the turnout, Hindus do believe in that.

Brahmasarovar is an ancient sarovar with historical and religious importance and it is also one of the largest manmade bathing tanks in Asia. Abul Fazl, who was one of the historians in Akbar’s court, called it a ‘mini sea made by man’.

Bhishma Kund

Location

Lying about 3 miles from Kurukshetra, is the Bhishma Kund. 0n the last legs of this war, Bhishma lay wounded on a bed of arrows. And as the end came near, he felt thirsty. The Kauravas, who were guarding him zealously, were unable to help him quench his thirst. At this Bhishma, who was the family elder of both the Kauravas and the Pandavas called for Arjun. Arjun's arrow is said to have brought the waters of holy Ganges.

Ban Ganga

Location

Legend says that this is the place where Arjuna, the patriarch of the Pandavas and the Kauravas, pierced the earth with his arrow to quench the thirst of Bhishma who lay mortally wounded on a bed of arrows. Today this site is worshipped as Bhisma Kund and lies at a distance of 12 kms from Kurukshetra.
