An 'odhni' with a yellow background and a central lotus motif in red called a 'pila', is a traditional gift of parent to their daughter on the birth of a son. The vibrant and colorful land of Rajasthan, with hospitable and well-attired men and women add a splash of colour to the otherwise parched landscape. The lotus flower, a symbol of purity and fertility, lends its name to an odhna called the pomcha, which is made in bandhej and is a combination of red and yellow or red and pink. The borders and central flower are bright red on a ground of pink or yellow.

Manjusha Kala or Angika Art is an art form of Anga region of Bihar. Notably artist Jahar Dasgupta born in Jamshedpur, Bihar which is presently under state Jharkhand.

A common sight in the curio and gift shops of Jaipur is boxes, tables and trays with brass or copper inlay work. This type of work is called tarkashi and it utilises burnished metal wire or tar set in the wood to create delicate geometric patterns. Deeper, in the narrow alleyways of the city, you can locate master craftsmen at work. Onto a plain, dark shisham surface, a naqsha (map) of the design is glued. The outline is then incised into the wood with a small chisel.

Brightly coloured lac bangles, handmirrors, pens, pillboxes and agarbatti (incense) stands are a cheerful and inexpensive buy in Rajasthan. In the pink city of Jaipur, lac trinkets are a common sight in every bazaar. Check out the dazzling bangles, often studded with glass gems, spirals of base-metal wire amid a wavy striping of other colours.

Due to its inaccessibility, this region (Garhwal and Kumaon) was least disturbed by the political upheavals that occurred in the plains due to wars. Temple architecture was patronised under the powerful and wealthy kings of Paun, Katuyaris, Pawars and Chanda dynasties who encouraged the construction of big stone temples, wood carvings, ornaments, pattas, aipans etc. Big stone temples were erected with highly intricate and ornamental carvings, having beautiful stone and metal idols.

Of all the handicrafts of Orissa the most unique and the finest, in fact the queen among them, is silver filigree, locally called tarakasi. The craft is localised at Cuttack town and a few villages in Cuttack district. The process consists of drawing silver through a series of consecutively smaller holes to produce fine strands of wire. These wires are then made into various shapes by deft hands of the craftsmen by bending them into different designs and soldering them with pincer and scissors.Silver used by the artisans is usually of high purity often exceeding ninety per cent.
