Sardhana

Location

Sardhana is situated 20 kilometers from the Meerut Town. The place Houses a famous Catholic Church built in the year 1822 by Begum Samru. Tradition has it that Sarkat, a Raja, founded the place and remained in the possession of his descendants till the advent of the Muslims. In 1778 Walter Reinhardt was assigned the Jagir of Sardhana but on his death in the same year the estate passed into the hands of his widow, Begum Samru. Begum Samru also Called Begum Sombre and had nicknames such as Zebunissa, Farzana and Joanna, started her career as a Nautch girl in 18th century India.

Hastinapur

Location

Hastinapur is the ancient capital of Kaurvas rulers of Hindu Epic Mahabharata. The place however is more famous for its Jain Temples these days. Acharya Kharatargatchh has described 4 stoops (pillars) at the time of his visit. The Shwetambar temple is renovated recently. The establishment of Digambara Temple followed it. Gurjar king Nain Singh renovated Digambara Jain Bada Mandir and Old Pandeshwer Temple. There is also Pandeshwer Temple. It is actually an old temple of Lord Shiva, situated in the ruins of old Hastinapur.

Draupadi ki Rasoi

Location

Draupadi-ki-Rasoi in Meerut is believed to be the site of Draupadi's kitchen and is situated on the banks of the Burhganga. In the history of Mahabharata it is narrated that when Pandav brothers along with Draupadi were on exile at the Hastinapur forest, Lord Krishna came to visit them. It was said that Lord Krishna wanted to appease his hunger and asked for some food from Draupadi. Draupadi had no food at her place to offer her revered guest. She was left with one grain of rice which she offered to Lord Krishna with devotion and lot of affection.

Sati Burj

Location

According to historical records, the Sati Burj in Mathura was constructed in 1570 AD. This attractive red sandstone monument was built by the son of Behari Mal of Jaipur to commemorate the demise of his mother who performed the ‘sati’ sacrifice or immolation.

Chaurasi Khamba

Location

It has 84 pillars and is also named as Nand Maharaja's residence. All the holy locations in this area are associated with a number of myths. The eighty-four pillars, the palace of Nanda is a beautiful brick and plaster edifice, which is a amalgam of several influences, Buddhist influence being the most prominent one. Aurangzeb rebuilt this palace as a mosque, with its pillars resembling the Qutab Minar of Delhi.
