Raja Maidam

Location

Raja Maidam is one of the popular tourist attractions of Majuli, which has a vault of King Purandar Sinha. The monument was built as a tribute to the king, who died on 1st October, 1894. Situated on the south bank of Tocklai River, the sanctum was constructed to house the ashes of the late king.

Bangalpukhari

Location

Bangalpukhari is one of the chief attractions of Majuli, which is located on the southern side of Jorhat city, near Na-ali. The historic tank was built in 1739, which is associated with a historic event of the murder of Badan Barphukan, an Ahom Governor, by Rupsingh Bangal.

Bangal was rewarded with a large sum of money, which was utilised in the construction of the tank. The historic tank became famous as Bangalpukhari. Natives do not utilise water from this tank, as it was constructed from the money received for killing a man.

Kachari Fort is a popular historic monument, which is situated in the vicinity of Silchar at Khaspur at a distance of about 10 km. Khaspur was the capital of Kachari Empire and Kachari Fort was the royal seat of Kachari Dynasty.

Maibong

Location

Located on the bank of the river Mahur and 53 km from Haflong. Maibang once flourished as the capital of Dimasa, Kachari Kingdom. Stone house & temple of Kachari king & other ruins of the kingdom are the main attractions of the place.
Maibong was once the capital of the Dimasa Kachari Kingdom. Its ruins lie on the banks of Mathur River, 47 kilometers off Haflong. A temple and stone house of the kingdom still exist here.

Bordowa

Location

Bordowa is also known as the Bordowa Toran. It is renowned for being the birthplace of the popular artist and dramatist of Assam, Srimanta Sankardeva, who was also the propogator of Vaisnavism in Assam. Famous for its two satras, namely the Narowa Satra and Salaguri Satra, the town also has a mini museum that offers glimpses into Assam’s past.

It is believed that the satras were founded when Srimanta Sankardeva returned from his first pilgrimage in 1494. He named the shrine as Thaan, for propagating the principle of one god, one mind and one soul. A Namghar, Monikut, Cari-Hati and Simhasana were also established in the complex.

Gargaon Palace

Location

Gargaon Palace, the royal seat of Ahom dynasty, is a popular attraction of Sibsagar, located about 13 km away. Gargaon Palace was built in the year 1540 by King Suklemnung, who was the 15th King from the Ahom Dynasty. The palace was rebuilt in the year 1762 by King Rajesshar Singha.

Of the seven floors of the palace, three were underground which had many underground passages. All these were later closed by the East India Company.

Talatal Ghar is a popular attraction of Sibsagar, located at a distance of 6 km from the town. This is an underground garrison built by King Rudra Singha in the year 1699. It is a three -storey structure which has its lowest storey connected to the River Dikhow by tunnel.

Hazara and Padum Pukhuri

Location

Hazara and Padum Pukhuri are two tanks situated near the Bamuni Hills of Tezpur. The Hazara Pukhuri is the third largest tank of this town, covering a total area of 70 acres. This tank was derived from the excavation held in the 19th century and it has been named after Hazara Varman.

On the other hand, Padum Pukhuri is a famous island park of Tezpur accessible through a wooden footbridge. The name of this Pukhuri suggests a lotus pond. Some attractive features at this park include a musical fountain, an iron bridge and a toy train.

Loharu Fort

Location

Loharu Fort was constructed by Arjun Singh in 1570 and is located in Loharu. The fort was built in both oriental and western style of architecture and has a fountain and a tank in the centre. Although the fort is under the Haryana Government which operates a tehsil and a treasury office, tourists can visit the fort to view the architecture of the period.
