State

Yuksom is a holy town enveloped in the sublime beauty of nature famous for offering the best trekking start-off point for high altitude trekking. The term 'Yuksom' literally means 'the meeting place of three Lamas'. It also possesses Dubdi Monastery, which is the oldest monastery (300 years old) of West Sikkim. It offers an opportunity to get a glimpse of the glorious history of Sikkim.

History

Yuksam in Sikkim was the first capital of Sikkim. This was the place, where according to the historical records, the first Chogyal of the Kingdom of Sikkim was enthroned in 1641 AD by the three learned lamas. According to legends, three lamas came from different places and consecrated the Chogyala King in 1600s here.

Accessibility

By Air: Bagdogra Airport in Siliguri, West Bengal is 140 kms away from Yuksam. There is Daily flight from Delhi and Calcutta.

By Rail: New Jalpaiguri in West Bengal is the nearest Railway station and it is 140 kms away. It is well connected with major cities of India such as Calcutta, New Delhi and Guwahati.

By Road: Yuksam is well linked with all the major district of Sikkim, state West Bengal, Bhutan Border and Nepal Border. Siliguri, the main base city from where one can get various transport to Sikkim is 140 kms away.

Accommodation

There are only few hotels and restaurant in town which serves both local and Indian delicacies. They also provide lodging facilities for the visitors. You can also stay in Gangtok for better quality accommodation, from where you can easily reach Yuksam in Sikkim by road.

Things to do

Trekking
While the Western District headquarters are at Geyzing, the real adventure begins from Yuksom, which serves as the base camp for unforgettable treks into the wilds of the mountains. These high altitude alpine treks take one through fairy tale landscapes and lush Rhododendron forests to heights of about 12,800 feet at Dzongri. For the more experienced trekker or mountaineer, trips can be made up to Goe Chala at a height of 18,000 feet and at the foot of the awe-inspiring Mount Khangchendzonga.
