Dhemaji, situated in the foothills of Eastern Himalayas, is one of the remote areas located towards eastern-most part of the state. The town is located at the confluence of rivers that flow down into Brahmaputra River, which has various tributaries, passing through the place. The name Dhemaji is derived from two Assamese words, 'dhal' which means flood and 'dhemali' that refers to play. This is a flood-prone area, known for a variety of fishes.
