Rock Cut Caves

Location

Rock Cut Caves are situated on the banks of River Brahmaputra, and display the architecture of the Salasthambha period. Located at Jogighopa, the ruins of these caves corroborate the belief that Assam was not outside the movement of the particular type of art, which was developing in Western India at that time.

Apart from having a roof, which is round in shape, these caves also possess a height of around 1.90 m with a breadth of 2.60 m and are about 1.8 mdeep. Though the caves do not have any kind of sculptural design, these possess a platform of mud and brick.

Among these five caves, some are comparatively smaller and bear no veranda and flights. Moreover, Archaeological Survey of India has taken up the preservation work for the protection and preservation of these caves.
