Bordowa

Location

Bordowa is also known as the Bordowa Toran. It is renowned for being the birthplace of the popular artist and dramatist of Assam, Srimanta Sankardeva, who was also the propogator of Vaisnavism in Assam. Famous for its two satras, namely the Narowa Satra and Salaguri Satra, the town also has a mini museum that offers glimpses into Assam’s past.

It is believed that the satras were founded when Srimanta Sankardeva returned from his first pilgrimage in 1494. He named the shrine as Thaan, for propagating the principle of one god, one mind and one soul. A Namghar, Monikut, Cari-Hati and Simhasana were also established in the complex.

Srimanta Sankardeva abolished the practice of sacrificing birds, animals and humans. The site is popularly known as Dwitiya Vaikuntha or the second heaven. The Fagua Festival and the birth and death anniversaries of Vaishnava saints are celebrated in a grand manner at these satras.
