History

The town of Raigad was earlier the site of the fortress of Rairi belonging to the royal house of Mores, a junior dynasty that had descended from the Maurya imperial dynasty. Shivaji Maharaj had seized this site after defeating Chandar Rao More in 1656 and renovated and expanded the fortress of Rairi and renmamed it as “Raigad or the King’s Fort” to commemorate his victoty over the Mores dynasty. Thus he built his capuital here in the 17th century and crowned himself at the fort on 6th June 1674. Theafter he was called Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

Shivaji Maharaj died here on 3rd April 1680 and even after 6 years of his death, Raigad continued to remain a Maratha stronghold with its broad gates and magnificent monuments.
In 1818 when the Marathas were defeated, the British took over control of the Raigad Fort which became their stronghold in this region.

Air: Mumbai Chatrapati Shivaji International airport, which is 140 km away from Raigad, is the nearest airport. All the major airlines have service from Mumbai to all major cities in India and many cities abroad including Singapore, Hong Kong, Colombo and gulf countries. Taxis are available from Mumbai to Raigad and costs about Rs 3000.

Rail: Vir Dasgaon railway station is the nearest railhead to Raigad. This station is connected to Mumbai and Pune with regular trains. Taxi services are available from Vir Dasgaon to Raigad.

Road: State transport offer bus regular and frequent services from Mumbai and Pune to Raigad. Raigad is well connected to all neighboring cities by the public transport buses, including Kolhapur (250 km), Pune (150 km), Mumbai (140 km) and Mahabaleshwar (75 km). Raigad Ropeway

The Raigad Ropeway is very convenient for those who cannot climb the 1450 steps and takes one from the foot of the hills to the top of the fort. The Ropeway was built by Jog Engineering limited who started the construction in November 1994 and commenced it in April 1996.

The Raigad Ropeway is a sightseeing package which includes the journey form the lower station to the top of the fort, a tour of the entire Raigad fort with experinced guides, visit to the Raigad Museum and a film show on Raigad.

Rock Climbing: Raigad holds so many interesting routes to reach there, varying from the comparatively simple ones to the exigent. From Pachad, Raigad is an easy destination, but those who want to deviate from the ordinary path can opt the adventure-filled route either from Mahabaleshwar or Pune.

Rock climbing in Raigad region is a worth attempting adventure. Scattered evergreen forests and fast wind makes the surroundings of this area very cool even during summers.

Pune, also called the "Oxford of the East" due to the presence of several esteemed colleges and educational institutions, is situated at the eastern edge of the Western ghats on the Deccan plateau. History

It is believed that the original inhabitants of Pune were the Rashtrakutas. In the 17th century the Mughals ruled over the city. In the year 1817, there was a war breaking out between the Marathas and the British. A battle was fought in Kirkee, now called as Khadki, a small town outside Pune city. The Britishers defeated the Peshwas and took over the rule. During the struggle for India’s independence, Pune took center stage for various social and religious reforms. Pune became home to some reformers like Mahadev Govind Ranade, R.G Bhandarkar, Gopal Krishna Gokhale, Maharshi Vitthal Ramji Shinde and Jyotirao Phule.

Panchgani

State

Panchgani is a well-known hill station offering views of the River Krishna on one side and the coastal plains of Maharashtra on the other. Panchgani derives its name from the five hills around it and all the hills are topped by a volcanic plateau known as Table Lands by the local people. These Table Lands are the second highest in Asia after the Tibetan plateau. Table Land is an important site at Panchgani, which is a flat mountain peak giving a miniature view of the coastal plains.

History

Panchgani was discovered by the British as popular summer retreat. The British influence can be seen in the architecture of some of its buildings and in some of plant life in the region.

In the 1860s, a British Superintendent (Mr. John Chesson) in charge of the hill station,introduced new plant species to Panchgani including silver oaks and poinsettias.

History

The city of Nagpur was established on the banks of the Nag River by Bhakt Buland, a prince of Deogad of Chhindwara district in 1702. In the later half of the 18th century, the Bhonsles of Maratha Confederacy took over the administartion of Nagpur. Later during British rule in India, Nagpur was taken over by the British under Doctrine of Lapse, publicized by Lord Dalhousie.

Ganesha Chaturthi
Ganesha Chaturthi is one of the most important festivals celebrated in Mumbai. Mahabaleshwar

State

Mahabaleshwar is a popular hill station, located in the Western Ghats range. With one of the few evergreen forests of the world, it served as the summer capital of Bombay province during the British Raj. The place is the source of the Krishna River that flows across Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The legendary source of the river is a spout from the mouth of a statue of a cow in the ancient temple of Mahadev in Old Mahabaleshwar.

History

Mahabaleshwar was developed as a health resort by the British. Mahabaleshwar used to be called ‘Malcolm Peth’ during the days of the British rule in honour of Sir John Malcolm who along with General Peter Lodwick helped develop the place. In the 19th century, they built a sanatorium here. A number of buildings, residential bungalows and churches gradually got built here. There was an open jail here wherein convicts from China and Malaysia were stationed. The prisoners would do road work; work in maintaining potato cultivations etc. Now this site is used by the Public Works Department.
Even though Mahabaleshwar was developed by the British, history traces its origin back to 1215 during the reign of King Singhan of Deogiri. Mahabaleshwar is divided into three parts- Malcolm Peth, Kshetra or Old Mahabaleshwar, and Shindola village. The old part is mainly of religious importance as it houses the temples of Lord Shiva and Lord Krishna. The new part is the resort area where holiday makers spend their time.

The main thoroughfare Dr Sabane Road popularly known as Main Street is the place to go for shopping, eating out, chemist shops and pharmacies. Be sure to buy a bottle of honey in Mahabaleswar. The farms around all grow strawberries, raspberries and mulberries - so buy some canned jams and jellies. Amble down the main street and pick up a pair of locally made shoes which are a good buy.

Kolhapur, also known as the Varanasi Of The South, is situated on the banks of river Panchganga and is known as 'Dakshin Kashi'. History

An excavation in 1945 on Brahnmagiri Hills in Kolhapur revealed the existence of an ancient town dating back to the Roman era. The city was ruled by many Indian dynasties in the years thereafter - the Yadavas, Rashtrakutas, and Chalukyas among others mostly rulers of medieval times. It was once the capital of the Silahara dynasty. The city is sprinkled with many of the temples built during the Satavahana dynasty However the city of Kolahpur flourished under the rule of Marathas when Kolhapur became the cultural hub promoting various crafts like drama, art, paintings. Today, the city is a prominent centre of the Marathi film industry.
Kolhapur was earlier called “Kolhasur”. Legend suggests that a demon named Kolhasur was killed by Goddess Mahalakshmi, whose temple is the main attraction in the city. She relieved the local population of his evil deeds, but honouring the demon’s dying wish, the city was named after him.
On the religious front Kolhapur was called as “Dakshin Kashi or Karvir” because the main deity here was Goddess Mahalakshmi or Ambabai. The city is one of the Shaktipeeths mentioned in Indian mythology – the book of Devi Gita.

The founder and architect of modern city of Kolhapur is Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaja.

Khandala

History

Aurangabad

Aurangabad is a historical city located in the west central part of Maharashtra State, on the banks of Kham River. The city was named after the last great Mughal emperor, Aurangzeb, meaning “built by the throne” in Persian. It is also called as "City of Gates" and it has plenty of them. The city is a tourist hub, surrounded with many historical monuments, including the Ajanta Caves and Ellora Caves, which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, as well as Bibi Ka Maqbara.

History

The Mauryans ushered Buddhism in this region of India, which is evident from the profusion of numerous Buddhist cave temples in and around Aurangabad. Temples built by Satvahanna and Rashtrakuta rulers are located here. The famous caves of Ajanta are a part of this Buddhist tradition. The heritage of Aurangabad is linked with different Muslim rulers and dynasties of India. The city was founded in 1610, on the site of a village named Khirki, by a local Muslim noble Malik Ambar. His son Fateh Khan ruled it and named the city as Fatehpur in 1626. Aurangzeb, the last great Mughal ruler, took over this city in 1653 and renamed it as Aurangabad. Due to its strategic location in peninsular India, Aurangzeb made Aurangabad his capital. He used this city as a base to quell the rising power of the Marathas.

Complex patterns of flowers, peacocks, parrots and the caves of Ajanta and Ellora are used as borders of sarees. Paithan sarees are being weaved and they follow age old traditions.

The shopping market of Cannought is now becoming very popular. It is making its place slowly but surely amongst the younger generation.

Gul Mandi: Like all other cities in India, Aurangabad also features a large number of bazaars. Gul Mandi is also one of the largest bazaars in Aurangabad. Exchanging also takes place in these markets.

Varities of goods are sold in this market. The products changes on all days and the products available depends on the day the market is visited.

But these bazaars do not have genuine shopping malls. The best quality products are sold in the markets. The special products are the Paithani saris. Different varieties of garments and Himroo silk stuff is also available.

Himroo Factory: The Himroo Factory is a major tourist attraction of Aurangabad. The conventional Himroo fabric is available here.

The Himroo material is an amazing mix of cotton and silk and it is known for its quality. Pathani saris and conventional handloom shawals can also be seen here. The materials of other factories and Himroo material and silver threads are also available here.

The designs and the patterns on these fabrics are the inspirations which is derieved from the Ajanta paintings. The locale of the Himroo Factory is ideal. The factory is near Zaffar Gate in the old town.

Amravati

State

Amravati (also known as Amrawati or Amraoti), situated in the Deccan plateau, is a small town which is believed to be the city belongs to King of all God, Indra. The town is located near the passes through the hills that separate the cotton-growing regions of the Purna basin to the West and the Wardha basin to the East.

History

Amravati District with the rest of the Berar was assigned to the East India Company by the Nizam following the treaty of 1853. After this province was assigned to the Company, it was divided into two districts, South Berar with its headquarters at Hingoli with neighbouring region restored to the Nizam and North Berar was reconstituted into East Berar with headquarters at Akola.

In 1864,the district of Yeotmal was separated from Amravati. In 1903, the Treaties of Assignment were superseded by an agreement under which the Nizam leased Berar to the Government of India in perpetuity. Berar was joined to the central provinces in 1903 to form the enlarged province of central provinces and Berar.

With the recognition of States in1956,Amravati district ,along with other districts of Vidarbha region was included in the then Bilingual Bombay State. Since the bifurcation of Bombay state into Maharashtra and Gujrat in 1960, Amravati,along with other districts of Vidharbha formed one of the districts of Maharashtra.
