Nongkhnum Island

Location

The biggest river island of Meghalaya that is Nongkhnum Island, is also the second largest river island of Asia. Nongkhnum Island is about 14 km from the district headquarters of the western Khasi Hills in Nongstoin. A walk through the villages of Mawthar, Mawduh and Lawse towards Nongkhnum Island takes about 2 to 3 hours. Nongkhnum Island covers a total area of about 20 to 25 sq km. In order to enter the island one has to cross a bridge located over the Weinia Fall. Nongkhnum Island is surrounded by the two rivers, the Namliang and Phanliang; and there are several fishing pools located within the island.

The Nongkhnum Island is said to be the biggest river island in the region of Meghalaya and also the second largest river island in Asia.
