Makaravilakku is the most important devotional view in Sabarimala Ayyappa temple. On the Makaravilakku day (Januray 14) a Jewel Casket is brought from the Pandalam Palace and the Ayyappa Idol is adorned with these majestic jewels. It is seen that a Garuda, an auspicious bird hovers over the Jewel procession.
The evening pooja, Deeparadhana, is performed by about 6.30 pm on Makarasankranthi day. Eye catching immaculate light appears thrice over the sky at a far distance in Ponnambalamedu. A polar star known as Makara star also appears in the sky during this time. Makaravilakku is a majestic view for the Ayyappa devotees, which will make the body and mind pure.
