Kayarohanaswamy Temple in Nagapattinam is one of the seven temples of the Vidangar. This temple is popularly known as Neelayadakshi. The prime deity in this temple is Kayarohanaswamy, a form of Lord Shiva. The goddess here is Neelayadakshi, the one with blue eyes. The temple is considered as one of the Shakti Peethas. The Goddess idol is in the form of a pubescent girl.
Legends say that the God Kayarohanaswamy blessed Sage Pundari, one of the ardent devotees, to attain moksha (salvage) along with his body. The Sage requested for the moksha for his descendants as well. There is a custom followed here in which any of the family members of the sage passes away, the mortal remains is brought to the temple entrance and the body is covered with clothes from temple.
