Silghat

Location

Silghat is a famous river port located on the banks of the Brahmaputra River. A hillock named Samantagiri can be visited in Silghat for viewing the adjoining hill ranges and tribal villages. The town has a famous temple complex, comprising numerous ancient temples, along with the Hatimura Temple. The Hatimura Temple is believed to have been constructed over a ruined stone temple of the early 18th century.

Another attraction of the town is a brick temple constructed during the reign of the Ahom king, Pramatta Singh. This temple is dedicated to Goddess Mahishamardini and is counted amongst the important centres of Saktism. Human sacrifices were performed in front of the main altar of the temple. A sword, along with other tools believed to be used for human sacrifices, has been preserved in the Assam Provincial Museum at Guwahati.
