The biggest river island of Meghalaya that is Nongkhnum Island, is also the second largest river island of Asia. Nongkhnum Island is about 14 km from the district headquarters of the western Khasi Hills in Nongstoin. A walk through the villages of Mawthar, Mawduh and Lawse towards Nongkhnum Island takes about 2 to 3 hours. Nongkhnum Island covers a total area of about 20 to 25 sq km. In order to enter the island one has to cross a bridge located over the Weinia Fall. Nongkhnum Island is surrounded by the two rivers, the Namliang and Phanliang; and there are several fishing pools located within the island.
Pelga Falls is about 7 km away from the Tura Town and is famous for angling and is also a popular picnic spot. A footpath has been developed by the State Tourism Department for reaching the Pelga Falls. Another popular tourist site, situated nearby, is the traditionally constructed Garo Bamboo Bridge, built over the Ganol River.
Rongbang Dar Waterfall, also known as the Rongbang Dare, is located close to Rombagre in the East Garo Hills District. The Tura-Williamnagar State Highway, which is a few kilometres away from the Tura Town, connects this waterfall with important towns in Meghalaya. The best time to visit the waterfall is during the monsoon season.
Tyrshi Falls lies in proximity to Jowai and can be reached through the arch bridge. The site offers a beautiful view of the Pynthor Nein, a rice valley.
Jarain Pitcher Plant Lake is situated amidst the local vegetation of the carnivorous pitcher plant. The plants are spread over an area of around 50,000 sq. m. The lake is surrounded by footpaths, pitcher plant gardens and arch bridges. A fountain in the shape of a pitcher plant, has been placed in the middle of the lake. Boat rides can be enjoyed by tourists at this lake.
Umlawan Cave is in the Lumshnong Village, near Jowai. The caves are the longest and the deepest in the sub-continent. These are interconnected with the Kot-Sati Cave and Umskor Cave. The caves are around 21 km long and around 100 m deep. Numerous stalagmite and stalactite formations can be seen inside these caves.
Marai Cave, also known as 'Krem Marai', is an intriguing cave and is associated with mythological stories. As per the locals, the descendants of the Syiems of the kingdoms of Mylliem and Khyrim dug the cave and came through it. Another story is linked with the cave as per which only daughter of the reigning deity of the sacred peak of Shyllong, known as U 'Lei Shyllong, lived there.
The cave is located at a distance of 16 km from city on the way to Jowai. There is a steady climb of 20 minutes along with the vegetation belt, rocks and cultivated land to reach the cave.
Krem Mawmluh Cave, located at a distance of around half a kilometre to west of Cherrapunjee, is one of the prominent tourist attractions of the destination. In the entire Indian sub-continent this cave is considered as a fourth longest cave with a height of 4,503 m. The entry to this cave is located at a height of 10 ft above sea level. In addition, there is a pool inside the cave, which is formed as a result of five different rivers finding their way inside the cave.
Krem Phyllut, located towards the south of Cherrapunjee, is one of the major attractions in Mawsmai village. This cave is around 1,003 m long, which comprises three entrances and two river passages.
