Balpakram National Park

Location

Balpakram National Park is one of the prime locations situated in the proximity of Baghmara in the district of South Garo Hills. The park is situated at an altitude of 3,000 ft above the sea level and is spread in an area of 220 sq. km. This park is home to various animals such as wild buffaloes, sambar, barking deer, wild boar, slow loris, tigers, leopards, clouded leopards and the rare golden cat.

Apart from animals, tourists can also spot various species of birds like great hornbill, common hornbill, oriole, kingfisher and Indian roller. Reptiles including king cobra, monitor lizard, krait, gekko and viper are also found in the park. Some of the rare insectivorous plants are also present in the park such as nepenthes khasiana, drosera and paphiopedilum venustum. The park is visited by naturalists, botanists and zoologists for different geographical and archaeological explorations.

Exotic species of herbs and plants, having medicinal value, are also found in this national park. The ideal time to visit Balpakram National Park is between the months of April and June, when colourful wild flowers and exotic butterflies can be spotted.

A National Wildlife Park 167 kms from Tura known as the abode of perpetual winds. It has often been compared to the Grand Canyon of U.S.A. for its similar precipices and gorges.
