Sri Sri Shyamrai Satra

Location

Around 366 years ago, the Shyamrai Satra, the hub of Vaishnavite culture and religion was established in the heart of the town of Goalpara. It was managed by two brothers – Late Raghu Medhi and Late Kush Medhi. However, initiatives were taken by the locals of Goalpara to establish a permanent base of the Satra. Hence, they approached the Meshpara Estate Zamindar, who offered 8 bighas of land in the centre of Goalpara for establishing this Satra. One of the most interesting aspects of the Satra is that the Asthi of Sri Manta Sankardeva has been preserved by the Satra authority.

Pir Majhar

Location

The “Majhar” of Hazarat Sayed Abul Kasem Kharasani located at the central part of Goalpara town is popular among people belonging to all religious faith. As the Majhar is located by the side of the main road of the town, it is well accessible to the tourists. The Muslims and Hindu pilgrims offer money and candle at the Majhar, seeking blessings from the Pir Saheb. People of different cults gather at the place to take part in the Urs.

Majar Shariff of Pir Saheb

Location

The Majar-Sharif belonging to the Sufi Saint Sayed Nasiruddin Kaderi, popularly called “Bagdadi” is located at Jaleswar-Katarihara, 60 km. away from Goalpara Town. The Saint is called Bagdadi as he arrived from Bagdad, capital of Iraq. Saint Sayed Nasiruddin Kaderi was also a leader of the Sufi movement. Each year tourists from various parts of Assam and West Bengal visit this Majar Sharif to take part in the Urs. The tomb of this Saint in the style of Taj Mahal is a very popular destination. The interior of the tomb is embellished with Arabic Calligraphy.

Surya Pahar

Location

The Surya Pahar or hill lies close to Golapara in Assam. The hill is enriched with ancient Indian sculptures and remnants of ancient temples are also found scattered all over the hill. The hill also has a modern version of sun temple. Worshiping Sun is an age-old practice in Assam. The Surya temple nestled on Surya Pahar is a simple structure and it preserves a round shaped tablet measuring four and a half feet in circumference featuring carved images, which represent various celestial bodies including Surya. The middle figure in this entire sculpture is enclosed with an inner circle.

Sita Jakhala

Location

Sita Jakhala is popular for the ancient temple situated on the banks of River Killing. The temple has many idols of Goddess Sita and Lord Hanuman. According to a popular belief, Valmiki constructed stone steps, leading up to River Killing, for Goddess Sita, so that she could easily reach the river from the temple. Thus, the steps were named Sita Jakhala.

Deosal

Location

Deosal village is located near the Pabitora Wildlife Sanctuary. It is believed that this village was the ashram of Maharishi Valmiki, where Goddess Sita lived after she was abandoned by Lord Rama. The site is popular for its temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. A festival is held at the site during the occasion of Shivaratri.

Thetha Gohain

Location

Thetha Gohain is a holy shrine located near the Nalbari District. The shrine was built at the end of the 19th century, on land donated by the late Janmi Majumdar who was an inhabitant of Kamarkuchi. The sacred shrine of Thetha Gohain is situated away from human habitation.
