It is believed that the deity, Kamakhya have her menstrual period during this period. Thousands of pilgrims come to the temple when the tantrik rituals is performed. During Ambubashi the doors of the temple remain closed for three days. It is believed that the earth becomes impure for three days. During this time no farming work is undertaken.

The Ambubachi is a ritual of asceses observed with “Tantrik means”. It is believed that the presiding goddess of the temple, Devi Kamakhya, the Mother Shakti, goes through her annual cycle of menstruation during this time stretch.
The Ambubachi Mela in Guwahati is celebrated every year during the monsoon season, which happens to fall in around the middle of the month of June.
