Udayagiri Caves

Location

Magnificently carved caves placed on the top of a hill, Udayagiri Caves are 2000 years old. There are 44 caves in all, which include both natural and others are man-made. A flight of steps and an ancient ramp rising gradually from the foot of the hill paves the access towards these caves.

The largest of all the caves is renowned as the Rani Gumpha or ‘Queen's Cave’ and it features some of the complicated carved sculptures. Other conspicuous structures are Caves 3 and 4, which are double storied caves, and they features sculptures of a lion holding its prey, elephants with snakes wrapped around them and pillars decorated with pairs of unusual winged animals.

A popular tourist spot, Udayagiri caves remain open from 8 am to 6 pm.
