Bhagundeshwara Kshetra

Location

Most visitors to Bhagamandala are pilgrims coming to offer prayers at the renowned ancient temple complex known as Bhagundeshwara Kshetra. There is an old stone with a ‘Shasana’ (edict) engraved in Tamil. The complex consists of four temples. The deity of the main temple is Shiva, and the three other temples are dedicated to Vishnu, Subrayanya and Ganapathy. The small Bhagamandala town surrounds the complex. Most of the activities of the town are centered around the activities of the temple.

The distinctive architectural styles of the temples reflect the artistic talents and exquisitely executed craftsmanship of the region. The temple architecture is an assimilation of the traditional Kerala temple architecture with that of the typical Nepali temple structural designs. The tiled roofs are beautifully crafted in several layers and look very impressive. One section of the roof has attractively blended copper plated gables. The exquisitely carved woodwork crafted by skilled workmen and the beautiful paintings adorning the temple walls are not to be missed.

The generally serene atmosphere at the temple complex is transformed during the annual temple festival that takes place between October and November. One of the attractive features during the celebrations is the lighting of lamps at the temple. The whole complex is lit up with thousands and thousands of gently flickering oil lamps to create an enchanting ambience.
