Stone Craft of Himachal Pradesh

Thanks to the fair variety of stone found in this hilly region, stone carving has been explored to the fullest in Himachal. Numerous shikhara (spired) stone temples dot the landscape. The Lakshminarayan temples of Chamba and the temples of Baijnath and Masrur in the Kangra Valley are some splendid specimens of the kind.
Beautifully carved memorial stone slabs called panihars are also found in several places, especially near temples and fountains.

Stone Carving of Bihar

Bihar has rich legacy of handicrafts and stone craft .It is visible and alive from the ancient pillars of the Mauryan period. Patharkatti in Gaya district is the traditional stoneware centre in Bihar. This area supplies in abundance the blue black pot stone from which artisans craft Buddhist icons, images and household articles like the pestle, the mortar kharal (medicine grinder). Chandil and karaikalla in Singhbum district and Dumka in Santhal parganas work on magnificently grained greenish black soapstone.

Ashoka pillar at Sarnath is the beautiful piece of the ancient stone carving artistry. Black stone artisans of Gaya in Bihar are also famous to build the Vishnapad temple in black stone in Gaya.

Durgi Stone Craft

Durgi is a small town, located at a distance of 10 km from Macherla .The famous Durgi stone craft originated in the Durgi. It is situated 10 Kms from Macherla in Andhra Pradesh. There is a school of sculpture and stone carving located here, which imparts this ancient skill. Some of the masterpieces of Durgi Stone Craft is found at the Nagarjunakonda museum.
