Asigarh Fort

Location

Asigarh Fort: Called the 'Gateway of South India' during the medieval history, the Asigarh Fort is the well renowned historical hill fort in Burhanpur, Madhya Pradesh. It is a pass through the Satpura Ranges that connect the rivers Narmada and Tapti, and thus a significant route to the southern part of India. The Asigarh Fort was thus called 'Dakkhin ka darwaaza', as it was impossible to have a significant control over southern India without access to the fort.

Ahukhana

Location

The Ahukhana was the hunting lodge of the Faroqui kings. In 1609 AD, when Akbar took over the fort he stationed Prince Daniyel here, who was very fond of hunting. Daniyel did a lot of beautifying around the Ahukhana, adding the hauz, gardens and so on.

There's also a garden here which is associated with Shah Jahan's daughter Alamara, called Bagh-I-Alamara. The Ahukhana is in quite good shape.

Bandhavgarh Fort

Location

Believed to be as old as 2000 years, Bandhavgarh Fort is an ancient fort in Bandhavgarh. It has been under the control of many dynasties who ruled the kingdom in which Bandhavgarh was a part. Maghas dynasties in the first century to Kings of Rewa controlled the fort during its history covering 20 centuries.

The legends claim that the fort was built by Lord Rama during his short stay in Bandhavgarh while returning from Lanka after defeating Ravana. It is believed that Lord Rama asked his brother Lakshman to take control of the fort and watch the movements in Lanka. The city got the name from this story.

Begamganj is a very old locality in Jiaganj. The main marketplace in Jiaganj(e.g. SabjiMandi) is within this locality. The Boro Govinda Bari is a place of religious interest. The Sarbajanani Durga Puja in Baroaritala and Saraswatitala is very famous and old one. There is a very famous family "Dhar Bari".

Cooch Behar Palace (Rajbari)

Location

Undoubtedly the most popular and prime tourist attraction of Cooch Behar is the Cooch Behar Palace, also called Victor Jubilee Palace or Rajbari locally. Designed and built on the model of Buckingham Palace of London, during the reign of Maharaja Nripendra Narayan in 1887, this magnificent palace is an architectural marvel. The palace once used to be the dwelling of the ruling family of Cooch Behar, is now protected and looked after by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). The fact that tourists are allowed inside the palace makes it all the more popular.

Buxa Fort

(30 km from Alipurduar), famous for the ruins of the Detention Camp used by the British Government for detaining freedom fighters of our country.

This fort atop the Buxa Hill at a height of 2600 feet is of great historical importance. The fort was used as a prison by the British during its rule in India. Many freedom fighters were imprisoned here during the British rule. After independence, it served as a refugee camp for Tibetans and Bangladeshis.

Martello tower

Location

The Martello tower, located here, is the remains of the struggle between the Santhals and the British in Pakur Town. Sir Martin, the tenth S.D.O of Pakur, built the tower in 1856 with the view of protecting the British Empire from the attack of the Santhal warriors, who had led many struggles to drive out the Englishmen, tyrant Jamindars and Banias from their land.

The tower is situated in the south-east part of Siddhu Kanhu Park, right in front of the local D.C.'s residence. The hills of Rajmahal and Jangipuru are visible from the top of Martello Tower.

Teliagarhi Fort

Location

The Teliagarhi Fort is another historic attraction of Sahibganj District. It has been named after the builder of this fort, Teli Zamindar, who dwelled here during the reign of Shahjahan. Near the ruins of this fort also lies the Raksisthan Temple, which belongs to the year 1819.

Betla Fort

Location

Betla Fort, built during the 16th century, is situated deep within the Betla National Park. This fort was invaded by four Mughal rulers, starting from Akbar to Aurangzeb. Presently a ruined fort, it was once the seat of power of the Chero Kings.

The Chero Kings ruled Palamau during the beginning of the 16th century. Later on, in 1779, the Betla Fort was captured by the British colonial rulers. This fort is around 120 m in height and is also known as the Tribal Fortress.
