Dhar is a small town located in the Malwa region of western Madhya Pradesh. It is picturesquely situated among lakes and trees surrounded by barren hills, and possesses, besides its old walls, many interesting buildings, both Hindu and Muslim, some of them containing records of cultural and historical importance. Founded by Raja Bhoja who did the honours at Bhopal, Bhojpur and Mandu, was the capital of Malwa until Mandu gained prominence. The place was ruled by the Sultans of Delhi during the Mughal Period. It was also a prime center in the Revolt of 1857.
