Deer Park

Location

Sarnath got its name from Saranganatha (God of Deer). The deer park is the place where the Buddha first proclaimed the Dharma to the world. He taught his disciples two discourses here - the Dhammacakkhapavathana Sutta and the Anattalakhana Sutta.

According to Huen Tsang, the world famous traveler and explorer, the Deer Park was the forest gifted by the king of Benares of the JÄ¿taka. It is believed that in this place the deer might have wandered unmolested. The place carries the dignity and reverence as the Buddhists home. This is a nice calm and cool place to relax and meditate, free from bodily pleasures and merge with solitude.
